What happened to the Hawk Tuah coin?
$HAWK launched on December 4, 2024, and lost most of its value shortly afterward. Welch, known online as the “Hawk Tuah” girl, had promoted the token, but a sharp price collapse does not by itself establish who was responsible or whether a law was broken.
What investors allege about the launch
In a March 30, 2026 update, plaintiffs’ counsel Burwick Law summarized allegations in an amended complaint: approximately 3.3% of the total supply was in the public float, while 17% was allocated to insider wallets without lockups. The complaint also alleges that one wallet acquired about half the public float in the first block, that liquidity-removal transactions drained approximately $1.27 million, and that the token fell more than 97% from its peak.
These figures describe allegations by investors, as summarized by their lawyers; they are not findings by a court. The figures also do not establish how much any particular person made or lost.

Was $HAWK a rug pull?
“Rug pull” is a common crypto term for a project whose insiders or operators allegedly leave buyers with a collapsing token, often after removing liquidity. It is not, by itself, a legal finding. The wallet and liquidity allegations summarized by Burwick Law are consistent with why investors might use that phrase, but they do not prove that Welch or any other named defendant deliberately engineered a rug pull.
At launch, an X Spaces participant identified by The Atlantic as “Doc Hollywood” described “Hawk Tuah” as “a cultural meme that everyone knows here in America.” That remark offers context for the token’s promotional appeal, not evidence about its finances or legal status. The Atlantic reported that his X account was later deleted.

Did Haliey Welch get in trouble with the FBI or SEC?
In a May 21, 2025 report, The Block said Welch recounted that the FBI questioned her after agents visited her grandmother’s house and that she provided her phone to the SEC. Welch said she was cleared. The report did not include an agency closure letter or an independent statement from either agency, so her account should not be described as a formal agency exoneration.
Welch also told The Block: “I did not have enough knowledge about crypto to be getting involved with it and I knew that, but I got talked into it.” The outlet reported her claim that she received a marketing fee and “did not make a dime” from the token itself. Those are Welch’s reported statements, not independently verified financial disclosures.

After the first lawsuit was reported in December 2024, Welch said on X, as reproduced by The Atlantic, that she was “fully cooperating” with the legal team representing affected individuals and wanted to help uncover the truth and hold responsible parties accountable. That statement records her public response; it does not settle the disputed allegations.
What happened to the $HAWK lawsuit?
Claims and defendants
The original complaint was filed on December 19, 2024. It alleged that $HAWK was marketed and sold as an unregistered security and described Welch’s social-media reach and promotional role. The complaint represents the plaintiffs’ account, not a judgment.

Burwick Law’s March 30, 2026 update described the case as a pending class action in the Eastern District of New York, captioned In Re $HAWK Token Securities Litigation, Case No. 1:24-cv-08650-AMD-JRC. The firm said the amended complaint named Welch, her manager Johnnie Forster, 16 Minutes LLC, token promoters, and other people and entities. It lists claims including unregistered securities sales and state-law causes of action. These remain claims by plaintiffs unless and until resolved by the court.
How much money do investors say they lost?
The Block reported in May 2025 that a dozen investors in the initial case claimed combined losses of around $151,000. That is a reported claim by those plaintiffs, not an audited total, and it should not be treated as the losses of all $HAWK buyers.

Does the SEC’s meme-coin statement decide the $HAWK case?
No. The SEC staff’s February 27, 2025 statement sets out staff views about meme coins generally. It expressly says it is not a Commission rule or a Commission position, and it does not determine whether $HAWK was a security. The private lawsuit and that general staff statement are separate matters.
What can—and can’t—we say about Welch’s life and career?
The available accounts document a public controversy, reported agency inquiries, and a civil case in which investors made serious allegations. They do not provide an independently audited figure for Welch’s net worth, her personal financial losses, or lasting effects on her career. Without that evidence, there is no sound basis to state as fact that the episode completely destroyed her life.
