Simon Cowell leads the reported rankings of American Idol judges’ per-season pay, at up to $36 million. Katy Perry’s often-cited ABC-era figure is $25 million, followed by Mariah Carey at $18 million and Jennifer Lopez at $17.5 million on her 2013 return. These are media-reported estimates, not verified contract disclosures, and the figures come from different eras and deals.
Highest-paid American Idol judges, ranked
The ranking below uses each judge’s largest reported per-season figure associated with their American Idol tenure. Most figures are attributed to earlier reporting by MEAWW’s 2024 roundup; Time independently described Perry’s $25 million salary as reported in 2018. The sources do not establish a consistent basis for comparing contract terms.

How much do American Idol judges make?
There is no authoritative public salary table or official contract disclosure establishing judges’ pay. Entertainment outlets have reported individual estimates, but they do not show a common method or disclose whether the amounts include bonuses, production work, or other compensation. A reported per-season salary is therefore best treated as an estimate tied to a particular judge and period, rather than a confirmed rate for the show.

Why the ranking needs context
Different eras and contracts
American Idol began on Fox in 2002 and returned on ABC in 2018. Judges’ reported figures span those different periods; they do not represent the same season, contract, or necessarily the same responsibilities. The available reports also do not provide consistent inflation-adjusted values.
Reported amounts can conflict
Keith Urban is a clear example: one reported account put his first-season pay at $8 million, while MEAWW’s roundup notes other reports as low as $3.5 million. That disagreement makes a single definitive figure misleading.
Season counts do not establish total earnings
A per-season estimate cannot be converted into a reliable career total without verified contract terms and a consistent count of seasons paid. This ranking compares reported season figures only; it does not claim to rank judges by lifetime earnings.

ABC announced on August 1, 2024 that Carrie Underwood would join Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie for the 2025 season. The announcement said Bryan and Richie would return for their eighth consecutive season; it did not disclose Underwood’s salary. Showrunner and executive producer Megan Wolflick said, “Carrie Underwood is the first ‘American Idol’ alum ever to join the judging panel.” See ABC’s announcement.
