Looking for something beyond the most prominent Netflix picks? These eight films and series—spanning crime, technology, sports, and family stories—were highlighted in a 2022 BGR roundup as titles viewers might have missed. “Hidden gem” is a subjective label, not a measured ranking, and the list is historical rather than a guide to what is currently streaming. Check your country’s Netflix app before choosing a title.
How to use this list
The recommendations below come from Andy Meek’s BGR article, updated September 14, 2022. Its choices were subjective; the article does not establish that these were Netflix’s least-watched titles or objectively its most acclaimed. Netflix catalogs vary by country and change over time, and current availability for these titles has not been established here. Search for each title in your local Netflix app before settling on a watch.
For more discovery and behind-the-scenes material, Netflix describes Tudum as its official companion site for shows and movies. Netflix also published a separate hidden-gems roundup on December 11, 2025; it is a different list, not a confirmation that these eight older picks are currently available.
Eight series and movies to consider
1. Snabba Cash — Swedish crime drama
This series brings together Leya, an ambitious businesswoman, a gang enforcer, and a troubled teenager in a story shaped by the pursuit of money. It may suit viewers who like crime dramas where business ambition and street-level conflict intersect. The BGR article mentioned a second season due in 2022; that was a historical release note, not a current schedule.

2. Vendetta: Truth, Lies, and the Mafia — documentary series
This six-episode documentary follows TV journalist Pino Maniaci and accusations involving him and a local judge. It is the list’s most direct choice for viewers interested in contested allegations, journalism, and the complexities of reporting on organized crime.
3. Suburra: Blood on Rome — Italian crime series
Across three seasons, the series explores Rome’s underworld and conflicts involving families, politicians, the church, and organized crime. Its multi-season scope makes it the longest commitment specified in this list.
4. Icarus — sports documentary
Directed by Bryan Fogel, this documentary deals with doping and the Russian sports scandal. Choose it for a nonfiction story at the intersection of sport and a major international controversy.
5. The Billion Dollar Code — German-language technology drama
An artist and a hacker reunite years after creating a way to see the world and sue Google over a patent. The premise looks back at early technology and its consequences; BGR compared that focus to Halt and Catch Fire. It is a pick for viewers interested in invention, software history, and a legal dispute.
Rank #3
6. Lost Ollie — four-episode family adventure
A lost toy searches for the boy who lost him. BGR describes the series as inspired by William Joyce’s book Ollie’s Odyssey, the book behind the screen story. Netflix’s synopsis, as reproduced by BGR, calls it “an epic adventure about a lost toy who braves the many dangers of childhood as he searches the countryside to reunite with the boy who lost him.”
7. Kodachrome — family drama
Jason Sudeikis, Ed Harris, and Elizabeth Olsen star in this drama about a son accompanying his dying father on a trip. Its focus on a difficult family journey makes it a more intimate option than the crime and technology stories elsewhere on the list.
Rank #4
8. Lords of Scam — 2021 documentary
This documentary covers people who defrauded the European Union’s carbon quota system and later turned on one another. It is the list’s choice for viewers interested in financial crime and its fallout.
