Spoilers for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Severus Snape and Lily Evans were childhood friends whose bond frayed as Snape embraced the Dark Arts and their values diverged. Snape’s love for Lily endured, but it was unrequited: they never became a couple. That love shaped his defection from Voldemort and his dangerous work for Dumbledore, without excusing the harm Snape caused.

How their friendship began—and changed

  1. They knew each other before Hogwarts

Snape and Lily’s friendship began in childhood, before either arrived at the school. Their history is more than a late revelation about Snape: it starts with two children meeting outside the wizarding world’s institutions.

  2. Cokeworth was their shared hometown

Snape, Lily and Lily’s sister Petunia grew up in Cokeworth. Petunia’s childhood reference to an “awful boy” means Snape, a detail that connects the Evans family’s early life to the memories Harry later sees.

  3. They were outsiders for different reasons

Snape’s difficult home life and Lily’s discovery of magic in a non-magical family gave them different reasons to feel out of place. Their friendship grew from a shared sense of separation, not from identical backgrounds.

  4. Snape introduced Lily to the magical world

Before Hogwarts, Snape was Lily’s first exposure to the wizarding world. That makes him part of the beginning of her magical life, even though their later paths diverged.

  5. Snape hoped Lily would join Slytherin

He wanted Lily to be sorted into his house. Instead, the Sorting Hat placed her in Gryffindor, while Snape became a Slytherin.

  6. Their different houses did not end the friendship

The house split is part of their story, but it is not a sufficient explanation for the rupture. The more consequential divide was Snape’s growing attachment to Dark Arts and to people who embraced them.

  7. Their Hogwarts friendship continued amid growing strain

Lily remained close enough to challenge Snape about his direction. Their bond did not vanish at the moment of sorting; it became increasingly difficult to sustain as his choices conflicted with her values.

  8. Lily objected to Dark magic and its practitioners

Her concern was not merely that Snape had different friends or belonged to another house. Lily struggled to understand his interest in Dark magic and his association with people drawn to it.

The choices that broke the bond

  1. Lily intervened when Snape was being bullied

In the memories Harry sees in Order of the Phoenix, Lily steps in during an incident in which Snape is being bullied. The scene shows her defending him; it does not mean she approved of everything he did or would later do.

  2. Snape was both a victim and a bully

His experiences of being bullied matter, but they do not tell the whole story. Snape also bullied others. Holding both facts together avoids treating him as either only a helpless victim or only a one-dimensional villain.

  3. The rupture involved Snape’s own conduct

The friendship reached a breaking point after Snape called Lily a slur. Lily was not responsible for that choice, and the scene makes clear how difficult it would be for their relationship to recover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. The slur expressed a prejudice that cut across their friendship

“Mudblood” is a derogatory term for a witch or wizard born to non-magical parents. Snape used it against Lily, despite knowing her background and their history; its significance is not erased by his later feelings for her.

  5. Lily’s objections were about more than one argument

The insult belongs to a wider pattern: Snape’s attraction to Dark Arts and his company among people who embraced them had already strained their friendship. The rupture was not simply a sudden quarrel detached from those choices.

  6. Lily later married James Potter

Lily chose a life with James, whom Snape had regarded as an enemy at school. Her marriage makes plain that Snape’s continuing feelings did not turn their past friendship into a hidden romance.

  7. Snape’s love persisted after she married

The story presents Snape as still loving Lily after her marriage and death. That persistence explains much of his later conduct, but it does not establish that Lily returned his feelings romantically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  8. The story calls his love unrequited

Snape’s feelings were not reciprocated in the way he wanted. They had been friends; they were not lovers, and the books do not reveal a secret relationship between them.

What Snape’s feelings changed—and what they did not

  1. His first appeal to Voldemort was for Lily

When he learned that Voldemort intended to target the Potters, Snape asked him to spare Lily. At that point, Snape did not ask Voldemort to spare James or Harry.

  2. He then went to Dumbledore

Fearing for Lily’s life, Snape sought Dumbledore’s help and agreed to undertake dangerous work. His appeal was rooted in personal attachment, not an initial attempt to save the whole family.

  3. Spying put him at sustained risk

Snape’s later role was not a single act of regret. He spied on Voldemort while working with Dumbledore, maintaining a dangerous double life that put him at risk of discovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. He protected Harry reluctantly

Snape helped protect Harry, but the protection was reluctant and entangled with his feelings about Lily. It should not be recast as uncomplicated paternal affection: Snape continued to treat Harry harshly.

  5. His love was a motive, not an absolution

Snape’s love helps explain why he turned against Voldemort and kept working for Dumbledore. It does not make his bullying, prejudice, earlier allegiance to the Death Eaters or cruelty toward students acceptable.

The doe Patronus, “Always,” and the memories

  1. Snape’s Patronus takes the form of a doe

In Deathly Hallows, Snape produces a silver doe Patronus. Its form connects him to Lily, whose Patronus was also a doe.

  2. Dumbledore’s question gets a one-word answer

After seeing Snape’s doe Patronus, Dumbledore asks, “After all this time?” Snape replies, “Always.” The exchange confirms that his feelings have endured.

  3. The shared Patronus is a connection, not proof they were a couple

The doe links Snape’s enduring love to Lily’s memory. It does not change the account of their relationship: Lily married James, and Snape’s love was unrequited.

  4. The doe also has a practical role

Snape’s Patronus leads Harry through the forest to the sword of Gryffindor. The scene uses the doe both as a symbol connected to Lily and as a guide that helps Harry in the larger conflict.

  5. Snape’s memories give Harry the missing history

As he dies, Snape passes his memories to Harry. They reveal the history of Snape and Lily’s bond, clarify Snape’s loyalties and help Harry understand the plan that must be carried out.

Why the relationship matters to the ending

Snape’s love for Lily helps explain his plea to Voldemort, his decision to approach Dumbledore and his later double-agent work. But the chain of events should be kept precise: Snape initially asked Voldemort to spare Lily, not James or Harry. Lily’s own choice to protect Harry—and the sacrifice she made—lies at the center of the protection Harry receives. Snape’s feelings influenced the course of the conflict, but they do not replace Lily’s agency or make every later consequence his doing.

That distinction is also why the “what if Snape had never loved Lily?” question remains a counterfactual, not a further fact about canon. The books show what his feelings motivated; they cannot establish exactly how events would have unfolded without them.
