The available reports do not establish that Mel B lost primary custody of her daughter, Madison Brown Belafonte. They describe a temporary sole-custody order for Mel B in April 2017, an agreed joint-legal-custody arrangement later that year, and additional conditions imposed in 2018. Those reports do not identify a later final order transferring primary physical custody to Stephen Belafonte.
What happened in April 2017?
On April 3–4, 2017, a court granted Mel B a temporary restraining order and temporary sole custody of Madison, according to ABC News. The order restricted Stephen Belafonte’s contact with Madison. It was an interim order connected to the restraining-order proceedings, not a final custody determination.
On April 24, ABC News reported that the restraining order would remain in place through the divorce hearing and that Belafonte could have monitored visits with Madison. Brown’s abuse claims appeared as allegations in filings; Belafonte’s representatives denied them, as reported by ABC News. Allegations and denials should not be confused with a court’s final findings about either parent.
What custody arrangement followed the divorce?
In November 2017, ABC News reported that the restraining order had been dissolved and that the parents had reached a custody agreement. The report described an agreement, not a judicial finding that Brown was unfit or a transfer of primary custody. ABC News

When the divorce was finalized in December, Entertainment Tonight reported that the agreement provided for joint legal custody and an agreed physical-custody schedule. Joint legal custody concerns decision-making; it does not, by itself, specify that each parent has equal time or establish which parent has primary physical custody. What did the court order in September 2018?
Sky News reported that Judge Mark Juhas ordered four months of random drug and alcohol testing for Brown. The order also barred either parent from using drugs or drinking alcohol within eight hours before custody or while caring for Madison, and called for a full-scale evaluation of the joint-custody arrangement. These were conditions and an evaluation within the reported joint-custody context; the report does not say they transferred primary custody to Belafonte. Sky News

Us Weekly reported a court finding from the September 4, 2018, hearing: “Based on the evidence presented, the court finds that there is a habitual, frequent and continuous use of controlled substances/alcohol by the petitioner [Mel B].” That is a reported finding tied to that hearing and its evidence. It should not be enlarged into a claim that Brown lost primary custody, nor should the testing order itself be treated as proof of every allegation raised in the dispute. Us Weekly

No. The timeline reported by ABC News, Entertainment Tonight, Sky News, and Us Weekly shows temporary sole custody for Brown in April 2017, followed by a reported agreement for joint legal custody and a physical-custody schedule, then additional conditions in 2018. The cited reports do not establish a later final physical-custody order naming Belafonte the primary custodial parent. They also do not establish the present-day schedule. A temporary order, a negotiated agreement, and a later court condition are distinct events; none should be presented as a final transfer of primary custody without a source documenting that outcome.
