Then give your partner room to respond. If either of you becomes too overwhelmed to listen, pause and agree on when you will return to the conversation. These steps can reduce avoidable defensiveness, but they cannot guarantee a calm response or make an unsafe relationship safe.
First, decide whether this is a conversation you can safely have
Communication advice is for disagreements where both people can choose to participate, speak honestly, and take a pause without fear. If the conflict involves threats, intimidation, coercive control, or physical harm, prioritize safety instead of trying to find the perfect way to phrase your concern.
The National Domestic Violence Hotline’s safety-planning resource describes individualized planning for people experiencing abuse, preparing to leave, or after leaving. It says advocates are available around the clock by phone or chat. If someone may monitor your activity, consider whether your device and contact method are safe before reaching out.
How to raise a difficult subject without starting with blame
Choose a time to talk
Ask whether your partner has the time and attention for a conversation instead of springing a major issue on them mid-task or during an existing fight. For example: “Could we talk about something important tonight? If tonight doesn’t work, when would?” The Gottman Institute emphasizes softening the start of a difficult conversation; its guidance says the first minutes matter. A respectful opening can help set the tone, but it does not determine how your partner will respond.

Describe one event and its effect on you
Stick to what happened and how it affected you, rather than making a sweeping judgment about your partner’s character or motives. “When we didn’t review the budget this week, I felt anxious” gives your partner something concrete to respond to. “You never care about our finances” turns a specific concern into a verdict about who they are.
Using “I” language is not a shortcut if it simply disguises an accusation—for example, “I feel like you’re selfish.” Name an actual feeling or need, and keep the focus on the situation you want to discuss.

Make one doable request
Say what would help, in terms your partner can understand and act on. “I’d like us to set aside 20 minutes and decide together what to do next” is clearer than asking them to “care more.” The Gottman Institute recommends a softened start; the American Psychological Association also identifies communication as important to healthy relationships. That is professional guidance, not a promise that one request will resolve a disagreement or prevent a breakup.
Here is one example combining a timely opening, a specific event, its impact, and a request: “Could we talk about the budget tonight after dinner? When we didn’t review it this week, I felt anxious. I’d like us to set aside 20 minutes and decide together what to do next.” Treat it as a model to adapt, not a tested formula or guarantee against conflict.

Listen before you answer
Once you have made your request, give your partner time to respond. Try to understand the point they are making before preparing your rebuttal. You can reflect what you heard and invite a correction: “I think you’re saying that you were waiting for me to bring it up. Did I get that right?”
The Gottman Institute’s listening guidance recommends slowing down and self-soothing when defensiveness rises. If you feel the urge to interrupt or fire back, take a breath and let your partner finish. Reflecting their view does not mean you agree with it; it helps establish whether you are responding to what they meant.

When to take a break—and how to return
If either of you is too overwhelmed to listen, ask for a pause rather than forcing the conversation forward. Make the return time specific: “I want to understand this, and I’m getting overwhelmed. Can we take a break and come back to it at 8?” The Gottman listening article offers a 20-minute restart as one example; choose an interval that works for both of you.
A break should create room to regulate, not leave the issue indefinitely unresolved. Before stopping, agree on when you will resume. When you return, pick up the subject rather than treating the pause as a substitute for addressing it.

What if the disagreement keeps coming back?
Some recurring differences may need ongoing management rather than a permanent solution. In a 2024 APA interview, John Gottman said, “69% of all conflicts are not resolvable; they come from those personality differences.” That is Gottman’s statement in the interview, not a prediction about your relationship or a rule that every recurring disagreement is unchangeable.
If the same issue returns, try to identify what each of you needs and whether there is a workable next step, even without full agreement. A conversation can be useful when it clarifies expectations or helps you manage a difference more respectfully; it does not have to end in identical views.
Quick Recap
A simple sequence to keep the conversation focused
- Ask: “Is tonight a good time to talk about something important? If not, when would work?”
- Name one issue: Describe what happened without guessing at your partner’s motive.
- Share the impact: Say what you felt or needed without turning it into a character accusation.
- Make a request: Ask for one observable action or a joint next step.
- Listen: Let your partner finish, reflect the main point, and invite correction before replying.
- Pause if needed: Agree on a specific time to resume if either of you is too overwhelmed to continue.
- Close with a next step: Decide what happens next, even if the disagreement remains open.
