The clearest explanation in a 2016 report by Variety journalist Cynthia Littleton: more than half of that approximate cost went to actor salaries.
What did the reported $9 million cover?
On October 4, 2016, Fox News published Cynthia Littleton’s Variety report that production of The Big Bang Theory had risen to around $9 million per episode. Littleton wrote: “Meanwhile, the cost of producing ‘Big Bang’ has skyrocketed to around $9 million an episode — more than half of which is actor salaries.” Read the October 2016 report.
That figure is an approximate reported production cost at that point in the show’s run, not an audited budget or a confirmed amount for every episode. A retrospective account places the estimate around seasons 8–12, rather than across the full 2007–2019 run. Work & Money’s retrospective relays a figure above $9 million through Variety, but does not supply a full budget ledger.
Why were the salaries so high?
The show’s established cast had become a major part of its commercial value, and contract negotiations put substantial per-episode pay at the center of the reported budget. Littleton said Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, and Kaley Cuoco reached $1 million per episode under a 2014 three-year pact. The report described the deal in the context of 24-episode seasons. Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar were reported to be earning around $900,000 per episode during the season covered by the 2016 article. These are figures reported for that period, not current salaries or rates that can be applied to every season.

The scale of those individual salaries helps explain Littleton’s statement that actors accounted for more than half of the approximate $9 million cost. It does not, by itself, provide an exact total for the cast’s payroll: the report’s salary figures concern named performers, while a complete episode budget would include other cast and production costs.
How did later pay negotiations affect the cast?
In March 2017, Mic reported that the five original cast members had agreed to reduce their salaries by $100,000 per episode each for the next two seasons. According to the report, the arrangement freed up $500,000 per episode for Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch, supporting an effort to bring their pay closer to that of the original cast. Mic’s account of the reported pay adjustment describes a negotiated, time-limited arrangement—not a permanent salary level.

What else contributed to the cost?
Actor compensation was the dominant explanation identified in the 2016 report, but it was not the only expense associated with producing the sitcom. Mental Floss names shooting costs, celebrity cameos, and royalties for the Barenaked Ladies theme song as additional contributors. Those descriptions indicate categories of expense; they do not give verified dollar amounts or establish how much each added to an episode’s cost. Mental Floss’s retrospective is secondary coverage, not a production accounting statement.
The available reporting does not provide a complete, verified allocation for sets, crew, postproduction, residuals, or other budget lines. It is therefore not possible to turn the salary figures and named expenses into a reliable line-by-line $9 million budget.

Who paid the production cost?
Littleton’s 2016 report said Warner Bros. TV’s licensing agreement with CBS called for CBS to cover production costs plus a slight premium. That describes the reported arrangement between the studio and network; it does not, on its own, establish the show’s overall profitability.
In short, the best-supported reason for the high later-run estimate is the cast payroll: the contemporaneous report put actor salaries above half of the approximately $9 million per-episode cost. Other production expenses also mattered, but the available sources do not substantiate a complete budget or show that every episode cost the same amount.
