There is no confirmed public update showing that Randy Jackson has beaten all of his ongoing health issues. He has spoken about managing type 2 diabetes after gastric bypass surgery and major weight loss, and he underwent spinal surgery for a back injury in 2019. Viewer concern after his May 2026 appearance on American Idol is not medical evidence of a new or continuing condition.
What health issues has Randy Jackson discussed?
A January 2019 Los Angeles Times profile reported that Jackson had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 18 years earlier. He underwent gastric bypass surgery and, according to that profile, lost 120 pounds. At the time of the article, it said he kept his diabetes in check with medication, healthful eating and regular exercise. That account describes his reported management in 2019; it does not establish his condition today. Los Angeles Times, January 2019.
Jackson also had spinal surgery for a back injury in 2019, according to The Independent. Its May 2026 report said he had not shared a health update since that operation, and that his representatives did not respond to a request for comment. The Independent, May 2026.
What did Jackson say about managing diabetes?
In a 2008 Los Angeles Times interview, Jackson said, “I’ve been working at this for four or five years,” and “I’m pretty good at it now.” Those remarks describe his perspective at that time, not a current health update. Los Angeles Times, June 2008.

In the 2019 profile, Jackson reflected on the period before his diagnosis: “I didn’t listen to any of the pre-diabetes signs.” Los Angeles Times, January 2019.
Why did viewers ask if he was OK in 2026?
Jackson returned to American Idol as a guest mentor in May 2026. TV Insider and The Independent reported viewer concern about his appearance; TV Insider quoted a viewer asking, “Is Randy Jackson ok?” Such reactions reflect what some viewers thought they saw, not a diagnosis or verified medical information. What can be concluded about his health now?
The public reporting cited here documents past health disclosures and surgery, but does not establish whether Jackson’s diabetes remains under control, how he has recovered from spinal surgery, or whether he has other current health issues. No current medical statistics or clinical assessment are available in these reports. It is therefore not possible to say that he has beaten all his health issues—or to conclude from his television appearance that he is newly ill.
