The biggest casting and creative news was Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom and Anthony and Joe Russo directing both Avengers films.
What Marvel announced at SDCC 2024
Marvel’s Hall H presentation covered five film areas. The official recaps describe updates and footage for two upcoming films, a title reveal for the Fantastic Four film, and the announcement of two Avengers movies. They are recaps, not complete transcripts of every onstage remark or a full account of footage shown exclusively to attendees.
| Film | Panel announcement or update |
|---|---|
| Captain America: Brave New World | Marvel presented an update and new footage. The recap characterizes it as a film segment, not an announcement of an unrelated project. Marvel Entertainment’s official recap and D23’s panel summary describe the presentation. |
| Thunderbolts* | The cast and director appeared, and Marvel showed exclusive footage. Disney described the film as a team-up centered on Yelena Belova and a group of misfits. Disney UK Press’s panel recap gives that description. |
| The Fantastic Four: First Steps | Marvel revealed the Fantastic Four film’s full title. The recaps also described Galactus and the Silver Surfer as threats to Earth; Disney characterized the presentation as retro-futuristic. Marvel’s recap, D23 and Disney UK Press cover the reveal. |
| Avengers: Doomsday | Marvel announced the title, named Anthony and Joe Russo as directors, and announced Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. The panel recap stated a May 2026 release date at the time. |
| Avengers: Secret Wars | Marvel announced the title and the Russo brothers’ return to direct. The panel recap stated a May 2027 release date at the time. |
The two Avengers films: titles, filmmakers and Doctor Doom
Kevin Feige announced Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars as the next two Avengers films. Anthony and Joe Russo were announced as directors of both, and Disney’s press recap identified Stephen McFeely as screenwriter. The most striking casting announcement was Downey’s return to the MCU in a new role: Doctor Doom.
The recaps presented these as announcements about the films and their creative team. They do not establish further plot details, so the panel news should not be stretched into claims about how Doctor Doom fits into the story.

What the 2024 release dates mean now
The May 2026 date for Avengers: Doomsday and May 2027 date for Avengers: Secret Wars are the dates reported in the panel’s 2024 coverage—not a verified current schedule. Marvel has revised theatrical plans before; for example, its June 2023 release-schedule update moved planned dates. The cited 2024 recaps alone cannot confirm whether either date remains current.

The documented news spans the five film areas above: updates for Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts, the Fantastic Four title reveal, and the two Avengers announcements. Because the official coverage summarizes the panel rather than transcribing it, it should not be treated as a complete inventory of every comment or every detail of exclusive footage shown in Hall H.
