What is “Bliss” in The Penguin?
“Bliss” is season 1, episode 3 of The Penguin. Its central thread is Oz and Sofia’s effort to find a way to bring Sofia’s new drug into Gotham’s trade network, while Victor considers whether he wants a future outside Oz’s criminal world. The episode’s tension comes from business arrangements and personal choices as much as from gang conflict.
The series stars Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, and Rhenzy Feliz as Victor Aguilar. Lauren LeFranc is the showrunner, and Craig Zobel directed the first three episodes. What happened before episode 3?
Gotham is living with the aftermath of The Batman
The series follows the events of The Batman (2022), in which the Riddler’s attack breaks Gotham’s seawall and floods parts of the city. Sky’s episode guide identifies Crown Point as the area where Victor loses his family in the flood. That loss underlies his trauma and visions in “Bliss”; it is a fictional event in the story, not a real-world disaster account. Sky’s guide to the series provides this context.
Oz, Sofia, and Victor enter episode 3 with different aims
Episode 2, “Inside Man,” leaves Oz balancing the Falcone and Maroni sides of Gotham’s gang conflict. Victor is now working as Oz’s driver, while Sofia is pursuing her own investigation. That is the essential setup: Oz needs room to maneuver, Sofia has a plan of her own, and Victor is newly tied to Oz’s life.

Victor gives up the escape plan and returns to Oz. The choice is not presented simply as loyalty or fear. In an interview with TV Guide published October 7, 2024, Feliz described Oz’s world as an exciting new possibility for Victor: “There’s so many reasons to go, but the reason I think he stays back is that Oz has introduced him to a new world that honestly — maybe he doesn’t want to say it out loud — is a bit exciting.” Feliz also said, “There’s power in it, and there’s money in it.” These are the actor’s interpretations of Victor’s motivation, not dialogue from the episode.
