Anne Hathaway’s online backlash intensified during the 2013 awards season, but it was never proof that “everyone” hated her—and it does not add up to a general confession that she was awful. Hathaway later acknowledged specific regrets, including speaking out of turn at the Golden Globes and not trusting a female director as readily as she trusted male directors. She also described the reaction as painful and said online toxicity affected how some people viewed her professionally.
When did the backlash happen?
The criticism commonly called “Hathahate” intensified around the 2013 awards season, after Les Misérables received major attention at the Golden Globes and the Oscars. In a 2014 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Hathaway recalled encountering an article asking, “Why does everyone hate Anne Hathaway?” while searching online for pregnancy rumors. She said the reaction left her shocked, embarrassed, and ashamed.
That phrase captured a visible online conversation, not a measured consensus. The available reporting does not establish how many people disliked Hathaway or show that one event caused the entire backlash.
Why did people criticize her?
Her awards-season demeanor
Coverage at the time and in later retrospectives described criticism of Hathaway’s earnestness, enthusiasm, and ambition. Those are interpretations of how she came across, not objective evidence of a personal failing. The accounts also place her awards appearances in context: she said she was exhausted and ill during the film’s press cycle, frustrated that coverage focused on her physical transformation rather than her character and the film’s subject of sexual slavery, and unhappy with how she delivered her Golden Globes speech.

A gendered reading of the backlash
In its coverage of Hathaway’s 2022 Women in Hollywood speech, ELLE framed the episode as online sexism aimed at a high-achieving woman and described the attacks as largely unfounded. That is an editorial interpretation, not a study proving the motives of every critic. It helps explain one way the backlash has been understood, but it cannot settle why each person reacted as they did.
Hathaway said the hostility hit deeply because it echoed the harsh language she had directed at herself since childhood. “When your self-inflicted pain is suddenly somehow amplified back at you at, say, the full volume of the internet… It’s a thing,” she said in 2022. She also described that period as an opportunity to see hatred from a new perspective.

What does Hathaway say she regrets?
Speaking before the rest of the cast at the Golden Globes
After Les Misérables won Best Musical or Comedy, Hathaway asked producer Eric Fellner if she could add something and spoke while the cast was still coming onto the stage. Looking back, she told Harper’s Bazaar: “I should have gone after everyone else. I own that; it was rude.” This is a specific acknowledgment of poor timing; it does not show that every part of the backlash was justified.
Her speech and a missed thank-you
Hathaway said she felt her Globes speech was “weirdly presentational” and regretted forgetting to thank her longtime manager, who was battling cancer. She called the omission one of the most regrettable moments of her life. She also described being exhausted, ill, and emotionally strained during the film’s press run. Her account offers context for her state of mind, not proof that the speech alone sparked the criticism.
Not trusting director Lone Scherfig readily
In a 2017 interview reported by ABC News, Hathaway reflected on working with Lone Scherfig, who directed her in One Day. She said she regretted not trusting Scherfig more easily and worried that internalized misogyny had influenced her attitude. Hathaway also described judging a first film directed by a woman by what was wrong with it while focusing on what was right in a film directed by a man. This was a specific reflection about bias she recognized in herself, not a general admission that she had been awful.
How did the backlash affect her?
Hathaway said the episode remained a frequent topic years later. In a 2017 interview reported by TIME, she said she was ready for the conversation to move on. She described taking criticism seriously when it pointed to something she wanted to work on, while separating other people’s treatment of her from her sense of self: “How the world feels about me has nothing to do with me.”
In a 2024 profile, Vanity Fair reported Hathaway’s retrospective account that some people would not offer her roles because they were concerned about the toxicity of her online identity. She credited Christopher Nolan, who cast her in Interstellar, with supporting her at that point, and said her career retained momentum. The profile reports her account; it does not independently measure how many casting decisions were affected.

In 2024, Variety reported that journalist Kjersti Flaa said Hathaway sent her an apology after their 2012 Les Misérables press-junket interview resurfaced online. In the clip, Hathaway declined Flaa’s request to sing a question and answer with her. Variety said it confirmed with Hathaway’s representative that she had officially responded. Flaa described receiving a long email in which Hathaway explained what she had been going through and apologized for giving her an awful interview. Flaa did not publish the full email, so its other contents are not established by the report.

What the record supports—and what it does not
- The backlash described in reporting intensified around the 2013 awards season, amid criticism of Hathaway’s awards appearances and perceived earnestness.
- Hathaway acknowledged particular regrets: speaking out of turn, forgetting to thank her manager, and not trusting a female director as readily as she trusted male directors.
- She described the online reaction as painful and later said she tried to separate criticism she could learn from from hostility that did not define her.
- Gendered criticism is one interpretation offered in later coverage, but the available sources do not establish one universal cause, measure public opinion, or independently quantify effects on casting.
