No direct comments in the interviews reviewed show Josh Hutcherson saying he regrets making The Hunger Games. His remarks point to something more nuanced: he was ready to move on from an intense, long-running commitment and worried about being typecast, but he has also spoken warmly about the films and cast.
What Josh Hutcherson has said about The Hunger Games
In a January 19, 2024 WIRED Autocomplete interview, Hutcherson described the cast as a close family and compared the experience to his “college experience.” He said: “It was the best, man. I miss it, I miss it dearly. It was a lot of fun.” Watch the WIRED interview.
The interview also includes a separate answer about regret: Hutcherson said he regretted never learning music or singing, or taking lessons. That was a personal regret, not a statement about the films.
Why he had mixed feelings when the films ended
As the original film series was drawing to a close, Hutcherson discussed both the appeal of moving on and the difficulty of leaving a role that had occupied years of his life. In a TIME interview published October 26, 2015, he said he would miss shooting the movies, while also being ready for the next thing. He described the production and press schedule as a major commitment and acknowledged fear of getting stuck in the role as he looked toward redefining himself. Read the TIME interview.

His remark, “It’s nice to have my freedom back,” makes sense in that context: it referred to the demands of the commitment and the prospect of choosing what came next. It does not establish that he wished he had never made the films.
He has also praised the adaptation and its themes
In an October 3, 2024 Esquire interview, Hutcherson described adapting a beloved book as a higher-pressure undertaking because readers cared so much about the source and its characters. He also praised the franchise’s themes and said it was “very cool to be a part of it.” Read the Esquire interview.

Hutcherson has also spoken about encountering rejection after a period of consistent success. ABC Audio and The Independent reported his account of a stretch with few offers and unsuccessful auditions. Those reports concern the difficulty of finding work after a major career period; they do not show that he regrets making The Hunger Games. ABC Audio’s report and The Independent’s report cover those remarks.
