Summit Entertainment said it replaced Rachelle Lefevre as Victoria in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse because her commitment to another film, Barney’s Version, conflicted with the production schedule. Lefevre said that commitment lasted only ten days and that she expected to continue playing Victoria. Summit disputed that the problem was limited to a ten-day overlap, saying it affected rehearsals and at least ten days of filming. The public statements document a disagreement; they do not establish the full contractual or scheduling facts.
What happened to Rachelle Lefevre’s role?
Lefevre played vampire Victoria in Twilight and was expected to reprise the character in The Twilight Saga: New Moon. On July 28, 2009, Summit announced that Bryce Dallas Howard would take over the role in Eclipse, citing a scheduling conflict with another commitment. The studio said filming would begin in Vancouver in August and announced a North American theatrical release date of June 30, 2010. Summit’s casting announcement.
The other film was Barney’s Version. RTÉ reported at the time that both productions were due to begin shooting on August 17, 2009. RTÉ’s July 30, 2009 report.
Why Summit said it recast her
In a statement published July 29, Summit said it had been advised in April that Eclipse was expected to begin shooting in early August, but did not learn of Lefevre’s Barney’s Version commitment until July 20. The studio said the conflict affected required rehearsals and at least ten days of principal photography, including work at key locations. It characterized the matter as a broader ensemble-production scheduling problem, not simply a ten-day overlap. Summit’s July 29 statement.

- Bella and Edward have been reunited, but their forbidden relationship is threatened to be torn apart again with an evil vampire still seeking her revenge. And Bella is forced to choose between her true love for Edward or her friendship with Jacob Black as the struggles between vampires and werewolves continues. But there is still another choice for Bella to make, mortality or immortality.
That is the studio’s account of its schedule and communications. It does not, by itself, independently establish what Lefevre’s contract required or what options were available to either side.
How Lefevre described the dispute
Lefevre said her commitment to Barney’s Version was ten days and that she had accepted only short-schedule roles to preserve her commitment to the Twilight saga. She said she believed she would continue as Victoria and was stunned and hurt by the recasting. In her statement, she said, “Given the length of filming for ‘Eclipse,’ never did I fathom I would lose the role over a 10 day overlap.” Lefevre’s statement, reported July 29, 2009.

But there is still another choice for Bella to make, mortality or immortality.
Summit and Lefevre therefore disagreed about both the scale of the conflict and how the commitment fit with her expected work on Eclipse:
| Issue | Summit’s account | Lefevre’s account |
|---|---|---|
| Scope of the conflict | It affected rehearsals and at least ten days of principal photography. | Her other-film commitment was ten days, and she did not expect it to cost her the role. |
| When the studio knew | Summit said it learned of the Barney’s Version commitment on July 20, after receiving an expected early-August start date in April. | Her reported statement described her expectations and commitment; it did not provide a competing date for when Summit was told. |
| Her commitment to the saga | The studio framed the issue as coordinating an ensemble cast and maintaining the filmmaker’s creative vision. | Lefevre said she was fully committed to the saga and to portraying Victoria. |
What can—and cannot—be concluded
The documented reason Summit gave for replacing Lefevre was the scheduling conflict with Barney’s Version. Lefevre’s public account was that the commitment was short and she expected to remain in the role; Summit said its production needs made the conflict larger than a ten-day absence. The contemporaneous statements and reports do not resolve the underlying contract, complete shooting schedules, or private communications, so it would go beyond the available evidence to say as an independently verified fact that Lefevre was fired for choosing another film.
