They add separately filmed material, alter existing sequences, expand the story and world-building, and take a more graphic, more satirical tone. Netflix released the two cuts together on August 2, 2024; their reported runtimes are 204 minutes and 173 minutes.
They are two alternate versions, not one extended film
The first cut, Rebel Moon — Chapter One: Chalice of Blood, reworks Part One: A Child of Fire. The second, Rebel Moon — Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness, reworks Part Two: The Scargiver. Netflix lists both director’s cuts as streaming, although its catalog can vary by country and over time. Netflix’s Tudum explainer describes them as expanded versions with more creatures, history, and action.
The distinction is not simply that each cut restores material removed from the PG-13 release. Snyder told TheWrap that the two versions are “almost alternate realities” from each other. That is his description of their differences, not a claim that they occupy separate official continuities.
What changed in the story and world-building?
The additions give characters and settings more room, while broadening the films’ strange, violent universe. Netflix’s description points to added creatures, history, and action sequences. TheWrap’s launch interview also reports more time for characters and greater emphasis on the world-building.

One of the clearest examples is the first film’s opening. TheWrap reports that the director’s cut begins with an extended invasion sequence absent from the PG-13 version, depicting Noble’s forces attacking a world and committing graphic violence against civilians. It is a substantial new story passage, not a brief extension of the original opening.
TheWrap reports that the two cuts contain about two hours of new footage altogether, alongside changes to existing scenes. Snyder said the R-rated versions were the films he originally wrote, while Netflix requested shorter PG-13 versions for practical commercial reasons. He described the expanded cuts as a plan made during production, with different scenes shot for them—not an afterthought assembled solely from deleted footage.

How do the rating, violence, and tone differ?
The director’s cuts are R-rated, unlike the PG-13 streaming releases. TheWrap reports more visceral action, explicit violence, and sexual material, including digitally added blood and gore as well as alternate takes. The result is a more graphic presentation, not just a longer one.
Snyder also characterized the R-rated cuts as more satirical. That shift matters alongside the added brutality: the expanded versions change the tone and presentation as well as the amount of material. The available reporting documents representative changes and the filmmakers’ account of their approach; it does not establish a complete scene-by-scene list of every difference.

How long are the director’s cuts?
TheWrap reported these runtimes when the cuts launched on August 2, 2024:

Why were there separate cuts?
Snyder said he pitched making the two films back-to-back and shooting an extended version with different scenes at the same time. In Netflix’s Tudum explainer, he described the plan as making the films “too epic to do in one film” and also producing an extended cut with scenes that would be shot specifically for it. Producer Deborah Snyder told TheWrap she appreciated that the expanded versions “weren’t an afterthought.”
That production approach explains why these cuts can feel like reworkings rather than a standard director’s cut: some scenes were filmed in alternate forms, while other sequences were extended or altered. The PG-13 releases and R-rated cuts reflect different choices about pacing, content, and emphasis.
