Dr. Jonathan Lazarus—Dr. L—died by suicide after Detective Alison Brown confronted him about their shared criminal cover-up. Brown did not simply murder him. The finale also solves Sutton’s death, offers a possible explanation for Joel “Laz” Lazarus’s visions, and ends on a cliffhanger that leaves Laura’s fate unresolved.
What happened to Dr. L?
Dr. L chose suicide after Brown confronted him about the crimes they had concealed. He had killed patients and manipulated evidence in investigations, helping frame others or produce wrongful outcomes. Brown knew about and participated in the cover-up.
As the truth threatened to come out, Dr. L agreed to die and leave an incriminating note. Brown pressured him, but the finale depicts his death as suicide—not as Brown physically killing him. The distinction matters: Brown is deeply implicated in his crimes and death, but the story does not reveal her as his murderer. TechRadar’s finale recap and TV Guide’s recap describe the same central reveal.
Who killed Sutton?
Sam Olsen killed Sutton. Obsessed with her, he entered the Lazarus home and encountered her in her bedroom. During their struggle, she fell and died. Her death had helped fuel suspicion around Arlo Jones, while Joel carried guilt for not going home with her.

That guilt was misplaced: Sutton’s killer was Sam, not Billy or Arlo. The resolution connects the old case to the present investigation and gives Joel a factual answer to a death that had shaped his life. TIME’s finale walkthrough also covers Sutton’s murder and its consequences.
Do the tapes prove Laz’s visions were imaginary?
No. Jenna finds recordings of Dr. L’s patient sessions, and material on the tapes corresponds to conversations Laz experienced as encounters with dead people. The recordings make a psychological explanation plausible: information from the sessions may have shaped what Laz saw or believed he experienced. But they do not prove that every vision was fabricated, nor do they rule out a supernatural reading.

The creators deliberately leave the question open. Harlan Coben said the finale clears the mystery before reopening it: “We wanted to clear the deck so that you sort of go, ‘Okay, it’s over. We solved the mystery. Oh, wait, maybe we haven’t,’” he told TV Insider. Executive producer Nicola Shindler summed up the latitude left to viewers: “It could be what you wanted to be.”
So the tapes change how the visions can be understood; they do not settle what they ultimately were. The finale’s uncertainty is intentional, not a missing answer the viewer is expected to infer as fact.

What does the finale reveal about Aiden and Laura?
The finale reveals that Aiden killed Margot. Its closing scene then places him at Laura’s bloodied home, holding a weapon. The scene strongly suggests he attacked her, but it does not definitively establish whether Laura is dead or what Aiden’s motive is. Treat the attack as an implication, not a confirmed account of her fate.
Co-creator Danny Brocklehurst described the final image as a deliberate opening for interpretation: “We talked amongst ourselves quite a bit about this, and we were happy in the end that we provided a source of answer, and the audience can make their own mind up,” he told TV Insider.

What does the three-legged table or dolmen mean?
The recurring image links the story to its concern with family history and repeating patterns. Dr. L describes time as cyclical and warns that sons can become their fathers unless someone breaks the pattern. As he puts it in the episode, “History is destined to repeat itself unless we break the pattern.” TV Guide’s recap discusses the image and its connection to the family-cycle theme.
The motif is thematic, not proof that Laz inherited his father’s violence or is fated to repeat Dr. L’s crimes. Its force lies in the possibility of repetition—and the possibility of refusing it.
