In a PEOPLE interview covered by The Independent on September 18, 2024, she also recalled being shocked by photographs of herself leaving his funeral and said her agoraphobia had resurfaced. These are Panettiere’s personal recollections, not a medically verified account of what caused the changes.
What did Hayden Panettiere say happened to her body?
Panettiere said that after Jansen’s death, she “just ballooned out,” describing a gain of 40 pounds in a short period. The figure is her account as reported by The Independent; it was not presented as an independently measured or medically verified statistic.
She recalled seeing paparazzi photographs taken as she left Jansen’s funeral and not recognizing herself. She interpreted the change this way: “Now I think my body was protecting itself, shielding itself from the world.” That quote reflects her own understanding of her experience, not a clinical conclusion.
What did she say about agoraphobia?
Panettiere said her agoraphobia resurfaced after Jansen’s death and that she had struggled with it previously. Her remarks linked the experience to her confidence about leaving the house, but the interview coverage does not establish a clinical explanation for her symptoms or a medical cause for her weight change.

What else did she describe about that period?
Panettiere has also spoken about body-image pressure while growing up in the entertainment industry and returning to film Nashville three months after giving birth. The Independent recounted those comments as context; they do not establish a medical explanation for what she experienced after her brother’s death.
In an interview account published by Extra, Panettiere said she worked with personal trainer Marnie Alton. She described their long walks as therapy-like and said exercise and releasing stress helped her feel better. That is her description of what she found helpful, not evidence that exercise treats agoraphobia or a recommendation for others.

What has been reported about Jansen Panettiere’s death?
The Independent reported that the family cited cardiomegaly, or an enlarged heart, alongside aortic valve complications as the cause of Jansen’s death. The outlet attributed that information to a family statement; the statement itself was not directly reviewed for this account.
