There is no public, substantiated figure showing how much Sophie Ellis-Bextor personally earned from “Murder on the Dancefloor” after it featured in Saltburn. The song’s resurgence was clearly substantial: it drew millions of UK streams in reported periods and returned to its original Number 2 chart peak. Those figures measure listening and chart performance, not money paid to the singer.

What happened to the song after Saltburn?

“Murder on the Dancefloor,” released in 2001, plays during the closing scene of Emerald Fennell’s 2023 film Saltburn. The scene helped bring the track to a new audience, with streaming and renewed chart attention documented in the UK and on Spotify.

Official Charts Company figures show the scale of the UK response. In the week the song re-entered the UK Top 10 at Number 8, it received 2.2 million UK streams. By comparison, it had averaged 293,000 UK streams a week during the 12 months before Saltburn arrived on Prime Video. Official Charts later reported 4.7 million UK streams over seven days as the song returned to Number 2, matching its original UK chart peak. These are historical figures from the 2024 resurgence, not current listening totals. Official Charts Company and its later chart report document the UK data.

Separately, Forbes reported that Spotify streams reached 1.5 million globally on December 31, 2023, a 340% increase over New Year’s Eve 2022. That is a one-day platform figure, not a royalty or earnings statement. Forbes’ January 2024 interview reported the figure.

Why stream counts cannot tell us what Ellis-Bextor earned

A stream total does not reveal the amount ultimately paid to a particular performer or songwriter. The public figures above say how often people listened; they do not disclose the licensing fee for the film placement, the contracts governing the recording or composition, or how any resulting royalties were divided.

Ellis-Bextor told Forbes that a written synopsis was provided when approval was requested to use one of her songs, and that she did not know much about the film at first. She also said she knew the title and director and that the whole song would be used. Her account describes the approval process, not the fee or licensing terms.

Ellis-Bextor and Gregg Alexander collaborated on the song’s lyrics. In an interview with Music Week, she described finishing the lyrics after hearing Alexander’s demo. The available reporting does not establish their ownership percentages, publishing or label contract terms, or personal royalty split. Without those details, a public stream count cannot be converted into a reliable personal-earnings estimate. Music Week’s interview covers the songwriting collaboration.

Did the viral revival make her a millionaire?

The evidence does not substantiate that claim. No attributable figure establishes what Ellis-Bextor earned from the film placement, the increased streams or sales, or related career activity. Nor does the reporting establish a reliable personal net-worth figure that would answer whether the resurgence made her a millionaire. Treating an unsourced online estimate as proof would confuse speculation with documented income.

The revival’s audience impact is real, but the distinction matters: a chart position, stream count or viral moment is not a disclosure of an artist’s take-home pay. Ellis-Bextor described the song’s renewed attention to Official Charts as “kind of magical” and said she still loved performing it. That comment speaks to her response to the moment, not its financial value. Official Charts published her remarks alongside the chart data.

What is known about the song’s wider reach?

Gregg Alexander later recalled that a publisher had told him the song was “the most heard music on the planet” in January. That is Alexander recounting a publisher’s statement; it is not a named or independently defined global measurement. It should not be read as a verified total or as evidence of earnings. The Guardian’s March 2024 interview with Alexander gives the context for the remark.

Did the resurgence lead to physical reissues?

Official Charts reported Saltburn-branded vinyl and CD reissues and identifies “Murder on the Dancefloor” as a single from Ellis-Bextor’s album Read My Lips. That establishes a physical-product connection to the revival, but not current stock, sales totals, or how much the artist received from any purchase. A product listing alone would not show whether a sale directly paid Ellis-Bextor or under what contractual terms. Official Charts’ report mentions the reissues.
