Heidi Gardner says she urged Saturday Night Live to consider Travis Kelce as a host, and that Lorne Michaels’ condition was that Kelce win the Super Bowl. The Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LVII on February 12, 2023; Kelce hosted the show on March 4. Gardner’s account credits her advocacy but not her alone.
What was Lorne Michaels’ condition?
“Lorne was like, ‘Well, he has to win the Super Bowl,’” Gardner recalled, according to Alicia Lutes’ December 28, 2024, report for Marie Claire. Gardner said she responded that it was a lot of pressure to ask, and then Kelce won.
This is Gardner’s recollection of Michaels’ response, as reported from her appearance on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast. The reporting does not independently document a direct interview with Michaels confirming the condition.
How did Gardner advocate for Kelce?
Gardner said she was a Chiefs fan, had seen Kelce in acting appearances, and had worked with him at the ESPYs. She found him funny and charming and thought he could host. She also made clear she did not want to take full credit: the show’s talent department had a role in the decision, too.

The same report describes her advocacy as “pre-Taylor.” Her account therefore does not suggest that Taylor Swift secured Kelce’s hosting opportunity.
From the Super Bowl to SNL
- Gardner made the case. She said she advocated for Kelce based on his humor, charm, and on-camera experience.
- Michaels set the condition, according to Gardner. Kelce had to win the Super Bowl.
- The Chiefs won. Kansas City defeated Philadelphia in Super Bowl LVII on February 12, 2023.
- Kelce hosted. He fronted the March 4, 2023, episode of Saturday Night Live.
The sequence explains the anecdote’s punchline, but it does not establish that Gardner alone arranged the booking or that Michaels’ reported condition was the only factor in the show’s decision.
