Originally previewed in October 2025, Fallout 76: Burning Springs is the Ohio map expansion that brought Walton Goggins’ Ghoul into the game. Bethesda released it as a free update on Dec. 2, 2025, so it is no longer an upcoming expansion.
What Burning Springs adds to Fallout 76
Bethesda described Burning Springs as a major map expansion into post-nuclear Ohio, with new characters, quests and bounty-hunting missions. The Ghoul, voiced by Walton Goggins, meets players in Highway Town and serves as their contact for bounties. Bethesda announced that the update would be free to Fallout 76 players; its stated release date was Dec. 2, 2025. Bethesda’s Burning Springs announcement has the official details.
The Ohio setting is a new regional flavor for a game that remains recognizably Fallout 76. Bethesda Creative Director Jonathan Rush described it as a place where “Ohio is a desert wasteland now,” adding that “Burning Springs wasn’t ever really explored in the past Fallout games, so this is all new territory for us.” Those are the developers’ descriptions of the setting, not a promise of a change to the game’s underlying format.
What the hands-on preview actually covered
Ars Technica’s Samuel Axon attended a Bethesda gameplay preview and spent several hours with the update. His firsthand account is useful for understanding the demo, but it was not a review of every quest or the finished update. Axon’s October 2025 preview distinguishes what he played from what developers described.

Bounty missions
Axon tried two bounty formats: one designed for solo play and another framed as a public event with other players. The bounty system sends players around the region; Rush called it “a really fun system” that would “take them all over Burning Springs.” That gives the Ghoul a practical role beyond the celebrity casting: he connects players to repeatable missions.
Exploration and a public event
Axon explored the Ohio region for more than two hours, encountered a settlement populated by many NPCs, and played a public event built around a junkyard fight with a cyborg Deathclaw. These are specific moments from the preview build, not a complete inventory of Burning Springs’ activities.

The Rust King story was not played
Developers told Axon that a story questline would involve the Rust King, an intelligent Super Mutant. Axon did not play those quests during the demo. The preview therefore establishes that the storyline was discussed, but it does not offer hands-on judgment of how that arc unfolds.
Why the Ghoul is not the whole story
Goggins’ casting is the clearest link between Burning Springs and the Fallout television series, but Axon’s larger point is that Fallout 76’s accumulated changes have mattered more to the feel of the game. Writing as a longtime player, he emphasized improvements to combat and balance, bug fixes, quality of life, technology and base building. That is his assessment, rather than a measured comparison or a claim that every player will notice the same changes.

Burning Springs adds more of the existing Fallout 76 experience in a different setting; Axon did not present it as a redesign. The distinction matters if you are considering a return: the region and bounty loop may offer fresh reasons to explore, but they do not erase the game’s basic multiplayer, looter-shooter and survival-crafting character.
Is Burning Springs worth trying if you bounced off Fallout 76?
It depends on what made you leave. The preview points to exploration and repeatable bounty missions as the clearest new attractions. If your main frustration was combat or quality of life, Axon’s emphasis on broader improvements may make a return more appealing—but those are his impressions, and the preview does not establish that the changes will resolve any one player’s specific complaint.

- More promising if: you enjoy roaming a new region, taking on bounties alone or in public events, and seeing how an evolving online Fallout game has changed.
- Less promising if: you dislike multiplayer, looter-shooter combat or survival-crafting. Axon did not recommend the update as a conversion point for players who reject those fundamentals.
- Wait for the quest details if: your main interest is the Rust King story. Axon did not play that storyline in the preview, so his hands-on account cannot judge it.
At the time of Axon’s October 2025 report, developers at the event had no cross-play or cross-progression plans to share. That is a dated account of what was disclosed then, not a statement of Bethesda’s current plans.

No. Bethesda announced Burning Springs as a free update for Fallout 76 players, rather than a separately purchasable expansion. You need access to Fallout 76 to play it. Xbox’s official product page lists the game for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows 10/11, and says it is included with Game Pass. Availability and subscription terms may differ by territory or change over time.

Where Burning Springs sits in Fallout 76’s timeline
Calling Burning Springs the game’s “next expansion” made sense in the October 2025 preview’s context; in 2026, it is a released update. Bethesda later announced Raven Rock as a major Fallout 76 expansion planned for 2027. PC Gamer described Raven Rock as “a prequel story to Fallout 3”; that later announcement is separate from Burning Springs and says nothing about the latter’s gameplay.
