Spoilers for the completed manga: Yui is real. Season one of the anime raises the possibility that Gabimaru’s memories of his wife were created by an illusion, but it leaves that idea unconfirmed. The completed manga resolves the question: Yui exists.
What season one of the anime actually says
Near the end of season one, Yuzuriha suggests that Iwagakure’s chief may have used a shinobi illusion to control Gabimaru. The characters discuss how leaders might use illusions to make children believe they could never disobey the chief, then wonder whether that could explain Gabimaru’s wife and memories. But the scene presents this as speculation, not a revelation: Yuzuriha cautions that Iwagakure may be different from her own village.

Gabimaru’s memory is fading, which makes the possibility feel urgent. It still does not prove that Yui is imaginary. For the anime’s season-one answer, the question remains open. (Crunchyroll News interview)
What the completed manga confirms
The manga ultimately confirms that Yui is real. The chief’s alleged illusion creates doubt around Gabimaru’s memories; it is not evidence that Yui never existed. VIZ identifies Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku as Yuji Kaku’s manga, which ran from 2018 to 2021, and lists the anime adaptation. (VIZ series page)

Why Yui matters to Gabimaru’s story
Gabimaru is a ninja from Iwagakure who is sent to a dangerous island to seek an elixir in exchange for freedom. His wish to return to his wife is central to his motivation, and Yuji Kaku has discussed Gabimaru’s love for her as part of what makes him unusual as a shonen protagonist. That emotional foundation is why the doubt about Yui lands: the scene threatens not only a memory, but the reason Gabimaru keeps trying to live. (VIZ interview with Yuji Kaku)
Is Sagiri meant to replace Yui romantically?
No. Anime director Kaori Makita described Gabimaru and Sagiri as “more like buddies” and said their relationship is special but not romantic. Their bond does not make Yui fictional or displace her role in Gabimaru’s life. (Crunchyroll News interview, August 9, 2023)
