Hacks: How the Show Was Created—and Why Jean Smart Fit Deborah Vance

Hacks grew from its creators’ conversations about women in comedy and generational taste. Their interviews explain Jean Smart’s fit for Deborah Vance, but do not establish that she was literally the first actor considered.

Hacks began with a conversation about women comedians, generational divides in comedy, and who gets treated as an icon. Its creators have explained why Jean Smart suited Deborah Vance, but the public accounts cited here do not establish that she was literally the first actor considered. They do show that the role called for someone who could move between sharp comedy and emotional depth—and that Smart made the composite character her own.

How the creators came up with Hacks

Paul W. Downs traced the idea to 2015, when he, Lucia Aniello, and Jen Statsky were driving from Boston to Portland, Maine. Aniello and Statsky were helping him work on material for a comedy special. On the drive, the three discussed comedians they admired—many of them women—and the unequal opportunities and respect women had received compared with male peers. They also talked about the divide between “cool” comedy and the sort of comedy younger comics might dismiss as “hacky.”

Downs recalled that they began imagining a show about “an icon of comedy who is misunderstood by someone of a younger generation.” The idea stayed with them: they exchanged it by email and continued discussing it for four or five years before pitching it, according to CapRadio’s 2023 interview with Downs. Statsky also placed the conversation on a Maine trip, recalling that they were going to shoot a sketch at a monster truck rally. In 2021, the creators described the idea as roughly six years old—a rounded timeline that is compatible with Downs’s account of its 2015 origin and several years of development. Their Creative Screenwriting interview discusses the trip and the premise.

The resulting setup brought questions of gender, age, status, and taste into a working relationship: veteran Las Vegas performer Deborah Vance and younger writer Ava Daniels, whose career has stalled. When HBO Max announced the series order in 2020, it described the show as a “dark mentorship” between a Las Vegas diva and a younger outcast writer. The announcement also included Downs’s enthusiasm: “it is a dream to write for the incomparable Jean Smart.”

Why Jean Smart fit Deborah Vance

The creators did not describe Deborah as a direct portrait of one real entertainer. They discussed a range of reference points, including Debbie Reynolds, Phyllis Diller, Joan Rivers, and Elaine May. Statsky called Deborah “an amalgamation of a lot of people that way,” then emphasized Smart’s contribution: “when Jean Smart signed on, who’s so incredible and one-of-a-kind, she made the character her own.” That distinction matters: the role drew on multiple influences, while Smart created a performance that was distinctly hers. Statsky made these comments in the 2021 Creative Screenwriting interview.

In a 2026 interview, Statsky said Smart was already an accomplished actress when cast, while Hannah Einbinder was new to acting. She said both performers could “go hard funny and also be deeply dramatic and emotional”—a combination the material required. Statsky summed up their ability to balance those demands: “Jean and Hannah would have to walk that tightrope, and they did it in spades.” The Credits’ 2026 interview supports the case for Smart’s range, not a specific order of casting decisions.

The 2020 series-order announcement confirms Smart’s casting and records Downs’s public excitement about writing for her. Taken with Statsky’s account of Smart’s range and individuality, it offers a clear explanation of why she suited the part. It does not establish that she was literally the first actor considered.

How the creators shaped the show’s central relationship

The “dark mentorship” was meant to contain both friction and affinity. Deborah and Ava differ in outlook and life experience, but the creators described them as funny, career-driven women who had both been cast aside. Their relative power was designed to shift: Deborah brings experience, while Ava is closer to contemporary culture. This gave the series a relationship built around changing leverage rather than a simple expert-and-student dynamic. The creators discussed that design in their 2021 interview.

They also said they wanted audiences to understand each woman’s world before the two were brought together. The creators recalled that their first extended meeting became a seven-page scene. They mapped the broader arc and planned pilot elements to pay off over the first season, including material that could be bookended in the finale. They also recalled receiving a direct-to-series greenlight rather than making and shooting a pilot first. These are the creators’ descriptions of their development process, not a general account of how television series are ordered.

What “first choice” can—and cannot—mean here

The available public accounts establish Smart’s casting, the creators’ enthusiasm about writing for her, and the qualities they believed the role needed. They do not document a casting chronology proving she was the first actor considered. The most defensible answer is therefore that Smart was a strong fit: the role needed a performer who could make Deborah funny and formidable while also allowing emotional vulnerability, and the creators said Smart brought that range and made the composite character her own.
