Gypsy Rose Blanchard was released on parole from Missouri’s Chillicothe Correctional Center on December 28, 2023, after serving 85% of a ten-year sentence, according to the Associated Press, citing a Missouri Department of Corrections spokesperson. In a PEOPLE exclusive conducted shortly before her release, Blanchard said, “I’m ready for freedom.”
When was Gypsy Rose Blanchard released?
Blanchard left Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri on December 28, 2023. Her release was on parole, not the result of an overturned conviction or an erased sentence. The date and release details were reported by the Associated Press.
Why was she released before serving the full sentence?
Blanchard had received a ten-year sentence after pleading guilty to second-degree murder. The Associated Press quoted Missouri Department of Corrections spokesperson Karen Pojmann as saying Blanchard had served 85% of her sentence before her parole release. That figure describes Blanchard’s individual case; it is not a general rule about Missouri sentences or parole.
What did Gypsy Rose say before her release?
In an interview with PEOPLE conducted just before she left prison, Blanchard said, “I’m ready for freedom.” The interview was identified as a PEOPLE exclusive in the syndicated report.

How did Blanchard’s case differ from Nicholas Godejohn’s?
Blanchard pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Nicholas Godejohn, her former boyfriend, carried out the killing and was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. Their legal outcomes were different: Blanchard’s parole release followed her sentence, while Godejohn received a life sentence after a separate conviction. The Associated Press report describes the case and the defendants’ outcomes.
Documentaries and screen portrayals about the case
The story has been depicted in the documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest and the scripted series The Act. A contemporary report also mentioned a forthcoming Lifetime docuseries. Those reports establish the works’ connection to the case, but do not establish where they are currently available to watch.
