There is no official top 15: this is an editorial ranking of Gundam designs, not a canonical verdict. The order weighs silhouette and proportions, color identity, memorable mechanical details, equipment or transformation where relevant, and recognizability. Official sources establish the series ties and features noted below; the aesthetic judgments are mine.
How this ranking works
Each entry is judged as a design: how clearly its shape reads, how its colors and mechanical details work together, and whether its equipment or transformation adds a distinctive visual idea. Recognition matters, but it does not automatically put a design first. The official sources cited here identify suits and selected features; they do not rank them or establish a definitive set of 15.
The 15 best Gundam designs, ranked
1. RX-78-2 Gundam — Mobile Suit Gundam
The RX-78-2 is the essential balance of the list: a readable, upright silhouette, bold color blocking, and a face and V-fin that remain recognizable at a glance. Its simple geometry gives the design room to feel both like a machine and a hero. GUNDAM.INFO identifies it among the suits in Mobile Suit Gundam. [GUNDAM.INFO]
2. MS-06 Zaku II — Mobile Suit Gundam
The Zaku II earns its place by making asymmetry and exposed mechanical character feel intentional. Its mono-eye, rounded armor, and utilitarian profile are a strong counterpoint to the RX-78-2’s cleaner heroic lines. GUNDAM.INFO identifies the MS-06 Zaku II as another suit from Mobile Suit Gundam. [GUNDAM.INFO]
#1 Best Overall
- The highest "metal expression" in the history of Gunpla -EXTREME METALLIC COMBINAITON-
- A kit with the most number of linked frame articulation gimmicks in MG History that enables the poses you imagine

3. RX-93 ν Gundam — Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack
The ν Gundam has a familiar Gundam foundation, but the fin-funnel array gives its backpack an unusually directional, expansive shape. The equipment changes the design’s outline rather than merely adding surface detail. The official product page describes the fin funnels as psycommu armaments suited to both attack and defense, and identifies psycho-frame as a material used in the suit. [Bandai Hobby]
4. Sazabi — Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack
Sazabi makes mass and presence part of its visual identity: broad armor, a powerful torso, and a rich red palette create a silhouette that reads as imposing even before its equipment is considered. It is a satisfying visual foil to the ν Gundam’s sharper, more articulated outline. The official Gundam Base report lists a Sazabi kit among its examples, but does not offer a design ranking. [Gundam Base]
5. Unicorn Gundam — Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn
Unicorn’s defining visual idea is the contrast between a contained, white armored form and the more exposed, energized look associated with its transformation. That shift makes the design feel like a reveal rather than a simple equipment change. The official Gundam Unicorn page provides series promotional material and episode videos, not an independent design assessment. [Gundam Unicorn]
Rank #2
- The latest internal frame design features a semi-monocoque structure, letting you experience the process of building a Mobile Suit
- The joint structure, returning to the original design, incorporates a new mechanism where the parts that look like joints bend properly by reinterpreting the movable axis
- The legs, inspired by the close combat MS Gundam that it's known for, use composite frame joints to create a human-like outline even when moved
- Details are intricately carved into parts not visible from the outside, such as joints and the backs of parts. Noticeable mounting holes have been removed, resulting in a seamless, integrated design
- The product box will have a Bandai Namco warning label, which is proof that you are purchasing an officially licensed product
6. Char’s Zaku II — Mobile Suit Gundam
Char’s Zaku II demonstrates how a color change can make a familiar machine feel like a character. Its red finish keeps the Zaku’s rugged, rounded visual language but makes the suit’s presence unmistakable. GUNDAM.INFO lists Char’s Zaku II among the suits in Mobile Suit Gundam. [GUNDAM.INFO]

The G-3’s appeal is the opportunity to see the RX-78-2 design language in a more restrained palette. The familiar silhouette does most of the work, while the color treatment gives it a cooler, less immediately heroic impression. The official Gundam Base report lists a G-3 Gundam kit; this placement is a visual judgment, not a source-reported ranking. [Gundam Base]
8. Dom — Mobile Suit Gundam
Dom stands apart from the more humanoid, upright silhouettes through its broad, grounded proportions. The result looks heavy and purposeful, with a visual identity that does not depend on a Gundam-style face or V-fin. GUNDAM.INFO names the Dom among the suits featured in Mobile Suit Gundam. [GUNDAM.INFO]
Rank #3
- Part of the HG Series
- Bandai's newest "High Grade (HG)" model kit faithfully reproduces the new Gundam's distinctive form

9. Zeong — Mobile Suit Gundam
Zeong is memorable because it departs so decisively from the familiar mobile-suit outline. Its unusual proportions and emphasis on remote weaponry give it an unsettling, almost incomplete presence. GUNDAM.INFO identifies Zeong among the suits in Mobile Suit Gundam. [GUNDAM.INFO]
10. Gundam FSD — Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin
The Gundam FSD is an appealing variation for readers who like a more equipment-forward, tactical impression. It places the recognizable Gundam form in a more heavily outfitted visual register. The official Gundam Base report lists a Gundam FSD kit; the source does not establish design details or comparative merit. [Gundam Base]

11. GM — Mobile Suit Gundam
The GM’s strength is disciplined simplicity. Its less ornate face and more utilitarian overall impression make it a convincing mass-production counterpart to the series’ more individualized machines. GUNDAM.INFO includes the GM among the suits in Mobile Suit Gundam. [GUNDAM.INFO]
Rank #4
- Faithfully recreates the mobile suit’s distinctive form
- The head can be replaced to display either the closed or deployed state
- Articulated joints in the torso, hips, and other areas allow for dynamic action poses
- The backpack features flexible articulation, enabling expressive posing from various angles

12. Char’s Zaku II themed design — RX-78-2 collaboration counterpart
As a piece of licensed visual branding rather than a separate mobile suit, Char’s Zaku II also shows how well its red-and-dark identity translates beyond animation. A 2025 Secretlab report documented products themed around Char’s Zaku II and the RX-78-2, including chairs, chair sleeves, and desk mats. This is evidence of a collaboration, not proof of a design ranking or current availability. [Secretlab, 2025]
13. RX-78-2 themed design — collaboration presentation
The original Gundam’s clean color blocks and instantly legible head make it especially adaptable to graphic applications. The same 2025 Secretlab report documents RX-78-2-themed products alongside Char’s Zaku II products. Its placement here reflects the strength of the visual identity, not a claim that merchandise establishes popularity or quality. [Secretlab, 2025]
14. ν Gundam in PERFECT GRADE UNLEASHED form
The ν Gundam’s silhouette is particularly suited to a large-scale model presentation, where the fin-funnel arrangement can be appreciated as a major compositional feature. Bandai’s product page lists a PERFECT GRADE UNLEASHED 1/60 ν GUNDAM kit and gave January 2026 as its scheduled release date. A scheduled release is not confirmation of present stock or availability. [Bandai Hobby]

15. RX-78-2 as a Gunpla design
As a model-kit subject, the RX-78-2 remains a compelling design because its strongest features are legible at many scales: head shape, shield, color blocking, and a clean overall outline. The official Gundam Base report documents Gunpla and lists examples including Sazabi, G-3 Gundam, and Gundam FSD products; those examples show kit offerings, not a comparative assessment of their designs.
