Retrospective accounts say Axl Rose confronted David Bowie on October 10, 1989, after Rose believed Bowie had flirted with his girlfriend, Erin Everly, during a Guns N’ Roses video shoot. Some accounts say Rose punched Bowie, but the precise physical sequence has not been independently established. The same accounts describe the two talking and socializing afterward.
What reportedly happened?
The story centers on the filming of Guns N’ Roses’ “It’s So Easy” video in Los Angeles. Rolling Stone Australia and the Irish Independent both date the reported confrontation to October 10, 1989. Their retrospective accounts say Rose objected to Bowie’s attention to Everly and that Rose punched him; Rolling Stone Australia also says Rose threw Bowie off the set. These are later accounts, not contemporaneous documentation of the incident. Rolling Stone Australia’s retrospective and the Irish Independent’s account agree on the date and broad outline, but do not independently settle the exact sequence of events.

The motive should be understood as an allegation about Rose’s perception, not proof of Bowie’s intent. Later accounts say Rose believed Bowie was flirting with or trying to pick up Everly. The sources do not include a direct explanation from Bowie.
How did the video shoot and Cathouse story differ?
The video shoot and the club appearance are described as separate events on the same day. Louder’s 2023 feature says Bowie was at the Cathouse that evening, when Guns N’ Roses headlined, after filming earlier in the day. It reports that Rose insulted Bowie from the stage and Bowie left early. The feature also recounts Cathouse owner Riki Rachtman’s recollection from a 2015 interview: a security guard told him Rose had chased Bowie down the street and shouted that he would kill him. Rachtman attributed Rose’s anger to Bowie trying to pick up Everly. That account adds a reported chase, but it does not establish the precise physical sequence at the video set. Louder’s feature distinguishes the club episode from the earlier filming.

What did Rose later say about Bowie?
Louder reproduces Rose’s account from a 1990 Kerrang! interview. Rose recalled Mick Jagger asking him about the Bowie fight during a soundcheck with Jagger and Eric Clapton: “So I told him the story real quick, and he and Clapton are going off about Bowie in their own little world, talking about things from years ago.”
Rose also described a later reconciliation in the same interview: “Bowie and I had our differences. And then we talked and went out to dinner and then went down the China Club and stuff.” Rolling Stone Australia likewise says Bowie apologized and that the two went drinking at the China Club. Rose’s recollection, as reproduced by Louder, says Bowie apologized in person. These accounts depict a subsequent conversation and social outing rather than an enduring feud.
