Half Widow is a 2017 Urdu-language drama about Neela, whose husband is taken during a raid and never returns. Neelofar Hamid gives the film its emotional center: her performance traces Neela’s loneliness and despair alongside the comfort she finds in family and community, and the hope that emerges as she weighs whether to hold on or let go. The film’s personal focus is affecting, though its supporting relationships and final stretch are less sure-footed.

What is Half Widow about?

Directed by Danish Renzu, Half Widow follows Neela after her husband, Khalid, is taken during a raid. He does not return, leaving her caught between grief and uncertainty: should she continue to wait, or begin to let go? The story stays close to Neela’s inner life rather than treating her experience as a mystery to be solved.

Rotten Tomatoes lists the film as a 91-minute drama in Urdu. Its cast listing includes Neelofar Hamid, Shahnawaz Bhat, Mir Sarwar, and Haseena Sofi. Rotten Tomatoes’ film listing gives these credits and details.

Why Neelofar Hamid’s performance stands out

Hamid plays Neela with a sensitivity that gives the character’s changing emotional states room to register. In her review for Scroll, Nandini Ramnath highlights the range of the portrayal: Neela’s isolation and despair are set against the solace of family and community, and the possibility of hope.

That range matters because Neela’s situation is defined not only by loss but by the absence of an answer. Hamid makes the tension between waiting and moving forward legible without reducing it to a simple choice. The performance carries the film’s most compelling material.

Where the film is less effective

Ramnath’s assessment is mixed rather than unreservedly positive. She finds the relationship between Neela and her brother underdeveloped, with their bond unfolding clumsily. The film also loses focus as it approaches Neela’s moment of epiphany, weakening the resolution of a story whose emotional stakes are otherwise clear.

The movie’s intimate scale has a trade-off. Ramnath describes it as relatively uninterested in explaining the roots of the Kashmir question. Demonstrations organized by the Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons provide a glimpse of collective activism, but the narrative remains centered on Neela’s personal response. That is a critical characterization of the film’s emphasis, not a substitute for broader context about disappearances in Kashmir.

Is Half Widow worth watching?

Consider it for Hamid’s lead performance and its close, poetic attention to a woman living with unresolved loss. Go in expecting a personal drama, not a comprehensive account of the political history behind disappearances in Kashmir. The central performance is stronger than the film’s handling of some supporting relationships and its final movement.
