The season’s appeal rests on its Derry atmosphere, performances and social commentary; whether those strengths compensate for scattered plotting is the central question.
What is IT: Welcome to Derry?
HBO’s horror-drama adapts Stephen King’s novel IT and expands the vision of Andy Muschietti’s films IT and IT Chapter Two, rather than offering an unrelated Pennywise spin-off. King’s official series page describes it as an expansion of the feature films’ world: Stephen King’s official IT: Welcome to Derry page.
Season 1 is set in 1962, before the films, according to TIME’s coverage. The creators drew on five interlude chapters in King’s novel, which give the series a way to explore Derry’s past beyond the central story of the children. If the show’s mysteries send you back to the source, King’s novel is the original text; this is not a claim that the series adapts the book in full.
Does the horror work across the season?
The critical case for the show is not simply that Pennywise is frightening. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus praises its “dreadful atmosphere” and “sharp social commentary,” while noting that “scattered plotting occasionally drains the fear from its chilling premise.” That tension is useful for judging the season: a disturbing setting can sustain unease, but horror loses force when the narrative keeps shifting before tension has time to build.

The first season has eight episodes, and its episode descriptions move among children investigating disappearances, Major Leroy Hanlon’s arrival, a military plot and the Black Spot. That broad canvas lets the series make Derry itself part of the subject, not just the backdrop for encounters with Pennywise. It also creates a pacing challenge: the more the story branches into the town’s history and adult characters, the more carefully those threads need to feed the main source of dread.
What does the prequel add to the IT mythology?
Creator Andy Muschietti said curiosity about the novel’s unresolved mysteries motivated the series. In a roundtable interview quoted by TechRadar, he explained: “The principal motivation of telling the story is just putting all the pieces of the puzzle together. The book is full of enigmas and questions. My curiosity was the main motivator for telling the story.”

Muschietti specifically pointed to the Black Spot and the Bradley Gang as questions that interested him. Those subjects help explain why the prequel reaches beyond a straightforward origin story: it is interested in the violence and history that shape Derry as well as the supernatural threat. The value of that approach depends on whether the town’s past deepens the horror, rather than feeling like background information competing for screen time.
How do the performances and social commentary affect the verdict?
Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus also points to “committed performances” and social commentary as strengths. The season’s multi-character design includes adult characters beyond the children’s storyline, as Muschietti described in the TechRadar interview. That wider ensemble gives the series room to connect personal stakes with the town’s larger history, although it also contributes to the plotting demands that divide critics.

For viewers, the practical distinction is whether they want a tightly focused scare story or a broader expansion of Derry’s world. The show’s strongest critical argument is that atmosphere, performances and commentary give the mythology new texture. Its weakness, according to the consensus, is that the spread of storylines can interrupt fear rather than intensify it.
How many episodes are there, and when did season 1 air?
Season 1 contains eight episodes. Rotten Tomatoes lists the premiere on October 26, 2025, and the finale on December 14, 2025; its episode guide shows the second episode on October 31, followed by weekly dates. The original season run is complete. See Rotten Tomatoes’ season 1 episode guide.

At access on October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 81% Tomatometer from 171 critic reviews and an 82% Popcornmeter from more than 2,500 audience ratings. These are platform aggregates, not a survey or a measurement of whether every viewer will enjoy the show, and they can change. The critics consensus gives a more useful explanation of the split: it praises the atmosphere, commentary and performances, but says scattered plotting sometimes weakens the fear.

That makes the series a qualified recommendation rather than an automatic pick for every horror viewer. If you want more of King’s Derry and are willing to follow a sprawling prequel, its mythology and social perspective are the draw. If your priority is a consistently focused run of scares, the plotting caveat is worth taking seriously.
