HBO Max says some shows and movies are available for a limited time, and its US app provides a Last Chance row to flag titles leaving soon. Some subscribers have publicly objected to removals—particularly when Discovery programming they value disappears—but those comments do not show how common the frustration is or how many people cancel because of it.
What HBO Max says about titles leaving
HBO Max’s US Help Center puts the basic policy plainly: “Some movies and shows are available for a limited time only.” The statement explains that availability can expire; it does not identify why a particular film or series is leaving or say whether it will return. HBO Max’s catalog includes HBO programming, Max Originals, and selected titles from Warner Bros., DC, Cartoon Network, Discovery, and other sources. That breadth does not guarantee that any one title will stay available. HBO Max Help Center: What’s playing on HBO Max

How to check what is leaving soon
The US Help Center gives different directions depending on the device:
- Phone, tablet, or computer: Search in HBO Max and look for the Last Chance row.
- TV device: Open What’s New and look for the Last Chance row.
These directions are for the US service. If a title is not listed, that alone does not establish how long it will remain available. Catalogs and availability can vary by country, so check the service in your region and confirm the exact title and season.

Why some subscribers are upset
For viewers, a removal can mean losing access to a show they chose the service for, even if the rest of the catalog remains large. In a May 2025 Reddit discussion about removals, one commenter asked, “Does anyone know why all those Discovery shows are being removed?” Another said Discovery shows were among the reasons they paid for Max. These are examples of individual reactions, not a representative survey of subscribers. Reddit, r/HBOMAX
The available evidence does not establish how many subscribers are unhappy about removals, whether removals cause cancellations at a measurable rate, or whether those commenters’ experiences reflect the broader audience.

What past removals can—and cannot—explain
TIME reported that 36 titles were removed from HBO Max in August 2022 and situated those changes in the period following the WarnerMedia–Discovery merger. That is useful historical context for a specific removal wave, not a universal explanation for why any current title is leaving. TIME: Why Your Favorite Shows Are Leaving HBO Max
Warner Bros. Discovery’s 2025 Form 10-K describes programming across multiple brands and distribution channels, including home entertainment. It does not establish the reason for an individual streaming removal or confirm that a specific title is available on disc. The report also says WBD added 14.7 million global subscribers to its streaming products during 2025; that company-wide figure does not measure HBO Max retention or dissatisfaction with removals. Ways to keep watching a title
- Check Last Chance. Use the row in the US app to identify titles flagged as leaving soon, following the device-specific directions above.
- Search the exact title and season. Check services available in your country; a removal from HBO Max does not, by itself, establish where else the title can be watched.
- Check for a physical edition if you want lasting access. Search for the exact series or film and verify that the relevant DVD or Blu-ray edition exists and is currently available. WBD’s report identifies home entertainment as a distribution channel, but does not confirm editions for particular titles. One Reddit commenter described investing in Blu-rays after canceling Max; that is an anecdote, not evidence that every removed title has a disc release. Reddit, r/HBOMAX discussion
Neither a removal notice nor an online comment is enough to establish that a title is gone permanently. The cited sources do not verify the present destination of any specific removed title, so check current listings rather than assuming it has moved, returned, or become available to buy.
