Discovery announced on May 14, 2025, that its Max streaming service would become HBO Max again that summer. The company framed the reversal as a way to put HBO’s quality-focused reputation back at the center of the brand—not as an admission that the earlier name was a mistake. For subscribers, the current help-center update says there are no immediate changes to apps, subscriptions, content, or pricing tied to the companies coming together.
Why did Max become HBO Max again?
Warner Bros. Discovery said the change was intended to bring HBO back into the service’s name because the brand represents high-quality programming. In the company’s May 14, 2025 announcement, CEO David Zaslav said: “Today, we are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media, to further accelerate that growth in the years ahead.” Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement described the return as a brand decision and said it would happen that summer.

That is the company’s stated rationale, not proof that the change will improve the service or its programming. The Associated Press reported that Warner Bros. Discovery did not acknowledge that dropping “HBO” in 2023 had been a mistake. Calling the move “giving up” is an editorial characterization of a reversal, not the company’s own explanation. The AP’s May 14, 2025 report covered the decision.
What changed between HBO Max and Max?
The two names emphasized different things. When Warner Bros. Discovery announced Max on April 12, 2023, it described the service as a broader proposition combining HBO Max and discovery+ content. The company scheduled Max’s U.S. launch for May 23, 2023. The 2023 launch announcement set out that broader brand positioning.

The name reversal does not, by itself, establish that the service’s catalog or subscription terms changed. Those are separate questions from branding.

The current help-center FAQ addresses the companies coming together and says there are no immediate changes to the apps, subscriptions, content, or pricing. It does not announce another name change. On the available information, subscribers should distinguish the completed 2025 return from “Max” to “HBO Max” from any later corporate or product changes, which would need to be confirmed in an updated company notice.
