After HBO’s 2019 miniseries Chernobyl renewed interest in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, posed visitor photos from the disaster site set off a public argument about tourism, social media and respect for a place marked by displacement and loss. The viral images made the controversy visible; they do not show that all visitors behaved disrespectfully or that influencer-style photos were typical.

What sparked the backlash over Chornobyl Instagram photos?

On June 12, 2019, the Los Angeles Times reported that a post compiling Instagram photos taken in the zone had gone viral, drawing more than 40,000 likes. The post highlighted visitors posing for dramatic-looking pictures at a place associated with the 1986 nuclear disaster and the displacement of people from their homes.

The compilation was described as misleading. Its popularity shows that the images attracted attention and criticism, not how common those poses were among visitors. It is evidence of a visible dispute—not a representative survey of tourists.

How did HBO’s series affect interest in the zone?

The five-part HBO miniseries Chernobyl renewed international attention to the disaster and the exclusion zone. A June 4, 2019, Euronews report citing Reuters and SoloEast Tours director Sergiy Ivanchuk said the company saw 30% more tourists in May 2019 than in May 2018. That figure is one operator’s year-over-year comparison for those two months, not an official count of visitors to the zone as a whole.

The series creator, Craig Mazin, welcomed the interest while urging visitors to remember the tragedy. As quoted in 2019 coverage, he wrote: “It’s wonderful that #ChernobylHBO has inspired a wave of tourism to the Zone of Exclusion.” His message framed the issue as a question of how people engage with the site, rather than a rejection of all visitors.

Why did the photos trouble people?

The zone is not simply a striking setting for photographs. The disaster uprooted communities and left a lasting human legacy; images that treat the site chiefly as an eerie backdrop can seem to overlook that history. The backlash reflected a tension between curiosity about a widely viewed television drama and the responsibility to approach a place shaped by real loss with care.

A 2023 peer-reviewed study examines how selfie-taking tourists affect local tour guides in the zone, placing the debate within research on dark tourism and social media. It offers context for considering the effects of visitor photography, but does not establish that every tourist takes selfies, or that all guides experience them in the same way.

Can visitors go to the exclusion zone now?

The Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant’s visitor information page describes an application process; it does not establish that routine tourism is currently open. The process requires a written request to the State Agency of Ukraine for Exclusion Zone Management at least 10 business days before a planned visit. The authority reviews the request and may approve a visit program or refuse entry.

The page lists possible grounds for rejection, including incomplete or incorrect information, unfavorable weather, emergency or fire threats, and work that prevents visitor access. It states a maximum visit duration of five days and lists being under 18 among rejection grounds. An application is not a guarantee of entry, and the page alone cannot confirm current availability. Anyone considering a visit would need to verify present access and authorization directly with the responsible agency.
