Haliey Welch said the sudden attention after her “Hawk Tuah” street-interview clip went viral left her embarrassed to leave home. In a September 2024 interview with PEOPLE, she said she hid for two weeks: “I was embarrassed to death to come out of my house.”
Why Haliey Welch was embarrassed after the video
Welch described the attention as a jarring change from ordinary life. “It’s been hella hectic,” she told PEOPLE, adding, “I hid for two weeks.” She also said she kept the clip from her grandmother for a while before explaining it to her.
These are Welch’s recollections in a 2024 interview, not a statement about her circumstances today.
Where the “Hawk Tuah” clip came from
The clip was filmed for Tim & Dee TV during a man-on-the-street interview in Nashville. The interviewer asked, “What’s one move in bed that makes a man go crazy every time?” Welch replied: “You gotta give ’em that ‘hawk tuah’ and spit on that thang!” The phrase became the viral nickname associated with her.
