A later interview report in February 2026 attributed further treatment details to her. These are media accounts of her public statements, not independently verified medical records.
What happened to Anastasia Katselas?
PerthNow reported on 24 August 2025 that Katselas was admitted to a Melbourne hospital on the Tuesday of that week, underwent an emergency hysterectomy and returned home on Thursday. The outlet said she described the events in a video statement: after seeing a doctor about a concern and having a Pap smear, she was told cancer had been found in her uterus. She said doctors told her it had been caught early and that she was awaiting post-surgery test results. PerthNow’s account does not establish her precise diagnostic pathway or provide independent medical confirmation.
The same report said Katselas thanked Cabrini Health and All Medical in Wantirna. It also quoted her urging women to keep up with routine cervical screening. The report’s wording reflects the terminology in her statement; Australian screening is now called the Cervical Screening Test.
What later treatment did she report?
A New Idea interview report dated 16 February 2026 attributed additional details to Katselas: tests had also found cancer in her cervix, she had undergone four bouts of radiation, and she was having regular blood tests. Those details are attributed to the interview report; no medical records or independently confirmed account are cited. The available reporting does not establish her present-day health status or prognosis.

Does a Pap smear detect uterine cancer?
No. A Pap smear is the former familiar name for cervical screening. Australia replaced Pap tests with HPV-based Cervical Screening Tests in December 2017. The Australian Government says the National Cervical Screening Program is intended to prevent cervical cancer: for eligible people with a cervix aged 25 to 74, the test looks for human papillomavirus (HPV), and screening is recommended every five years.
That screening is not a test for uterine or endometrial cancer. The Australian Government states: “Cervical screening does not check for, or prevent, other cancers such as ovarian or endometrial cancer.” The program’s guidance makes clear that the reported sequence in Katselas’s case should not be read as evidence that a Pap smear detected uterine cancer. A doctor may investigate a concern through additional steps, but the reports do not specify those steps. Cancer Council Australia likewise says cervical screening tests are not used to diagnose uterine cancer; diagnosis requires testing a tissue sample. See Cancer Council Australia’s uterine cancer information.

What an emergency hysterectomy means
A hysterectomy is surgery to remove the uterus. The description “emergency” in the 2025 report indicates that the operation was reported as urgent, but the article does not provide enough clinical detail to explain why it was needed on that timetable or what exact procedure was performed. A hysterectomy is not itself proof of a particular cancer stage, and the phrase “caught early,” as attributed to Katselas, does not establish a prognosis.
For readers seeking screening information, the relevant Australian Government resource is the National Cervical Screening Program. Personal symptoms or concerns should be discussed with a healthcare professional; screening and diagnostic investigations serve different purposes.
