The premise offers a feature-length case, but whether its clues, pacing and resolution work is a matter for viewers to judge.
What happens in “Want You Dead”?
An unidentified murder victim is found in the Sussex countryside. A second discovery in central Brighton appears to connect the cases, and the crime scenes seem designed to communicate a deliberate message. The investigation points toward a deeply personal, meticulously planned motive, but ITV’s synopsis leaves the victims’ identities, the solution and the full clue chain unrevealed.
That is the spoiler-light premise, rather than a plot summary: the official description gives enough to establish the investigation’s shape without giving away its central answers. ITV’s press synopsis calls the scenes “puzzling and elaborate – designed to send a deliberate message.” ITV’s episode synopsis is the source for that description.
Is the episode supernatural?
Nothing in ITV’s official synopsis suggests that the murders depend on magic or a supernatural cause. Its stated ingredients are a connected investigation, crime-scene clues, post-mortem questions and a planned motive, which place the premise in police-procedural territory. That does not establish that every scene avoids uncanny imagery; it does mean the mystery is framed as a case for Grace and his team to investigate, not as a supernatural story.

What kind of episode should viewers expect?
At 1 hour 30 minutes, this is a feature-length drama rather than a short instalment. ITVX also flags scenes of violence, so it may not suit viewers looking for a gentle or low-intensity mystery. ITVX’s listing gives the runtime and content note; availability can vary by territory and date.
The credited cast includes John Simm as Roy Grace, Richie Campbell as Glen Branson, Laura Elphinstone as Bella Moy and Craig Parkinson as Norman Potting. Those credits identify the returning characters, but cannot by themselves say how much room the episode gives each performer or how effectively the cast handles the material. Ben Court and Caroline Ip are listed as writers; Bille Eltringham is associated with the direction in secondary production metadata.

Does “Want You Dead” work as a mystery?
The premise raises the right questions for a clue-led police case: what links the discoveries, what message the scenes are meant to send, and how the evidence points to a motive. But a synopsis cannot establish whether the clues are fair, the forensic steps feel credible, or the final explanation is earned. Those are the details that determine whether the episode is satisfying rather than merely intriguing.
For a spoiler-free viewing, watch for whether the investigation gives you enough information to form a theory before Grace’s team does, whether the case keeps gaining momentum across its 90-minute runtime, and whether its personal motive follows convincingly from what the episode has shown. These are useful tests of the mystery, not conclusions that can be drawn from the premise alone.

How does it relate to Peter James’s novel?
ITV describes Grace as based on Peter James’s Roy Grace novels, and secondary episode metadata associates this episode with James’s novel Want You Dead. That supports a connection, but does not establish how closely the episode adapts the book or what it changes. Readers curious about the story in another form can look for the episode’s production metadata; it is not evidence of a scene-by-scene match.
