Contemporaneous reports said a workaround involving the Final Fantasy XV demo executable and Origin’s preloaded game files let players launch the full Windows Edition before its PC release. The central technical detail was never officially confirmed: PCGamesN attributed the explanation to a NeoGAF post and said it could not verify the account at the time. Steam’s official announcement confirms that a preload was available, but does not confirm that Origin’s files were unencrypted.
What happened, according to the contemporary reports?
PCGamesN reported on March 9, 2018, citing a NeoGAF post, that Chinese group 3DM used the free demo executable to load the full-game files from an Origin preload. The account said those files were apparently unencrypted and that the demo executable did not use Denuvo. DSOGaming published a similar account on March 3, describing the game as cracked four days before the planned March 6 PC release.
Those are secondary reports of an online explanation, not an official technical postmortem. PCGamesN explicitly said it could not verify the account at the time. The careful description is therefore a reported weakness in how the demo executable and preloaded files were handled—not a proven claim that Denuvo itself was cracked, or that EA or Square Enix acknowledged an encryption failure.
What is confirmed about the preload?
On March 1, the official FINAL FANTASY XV WINDOWS EDITION Steam community account announced that players could preload the Windows Edition ahead of launch. Its notice said: “you can pre-load FFXV Windows Edition right now so you’ll be able to jump straight into the world of Eos as soon as the game launches next week on Tuesday 6th March.” The same announcement said a free demo was available and that demo saves and progress would not carry over to the full game.

That official post documents the preload and the demo, but it refers to Steam. It does not verify what files Origin provided, how those files were protected, or the method described in the reports. Square Enix’s announcement listed Steam, Origin, and Windows Store as storefronts for the Windows Edition; the existence of a Steam preload notice should not be mistaken for confirmation of the alleged Origin issue.
Why do sources give different release dates?
Square Enix announced the Windows Edition on January 16, 2018, initially naming March 6 for release. A February 2 update changed the planned date to March 7. Yet the March 1 Steam preload notice still described launch as Tuesday, March 6. The sources thus differ by one day; they do not establish a single explanation for the discrepancy, so the dates are best attributed to the announcement or storefront notice that stated them.

DSOGaming’s March 3 report used March 6 as the planned PC release and described the crack as arriving four days earlier. PCGamesN reported the story on March 9, after the launch window, and also described the crack as appearing before release. The “four days” phrasing belongs to that contemporary date framing rather than serving as an independently verified measure of the technical exploit.
