Jo Koy hosted the 81st Golden Globe Awards on January 7, 2024. After some jokes drew a muted response, he pointed to his short preparation period and said he had written some of the jokes that were getting laughs. He later called that comment about the writers a “rookie move.” The reporting describes the response in qualitative terms; it does not establish how many people booed or measure the audience’s reaction.
What Jo Koy said during the monologue
The official Golden Globes archive lists Koy’s opening monologue for the January 7, 2024 ceremony. For the specific lines, contemporaneous reporting is the source: Access Hollywood reproduced Koy saying, “Yo, I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up! You’re kidding me, right? Slow down – I wrote some of these and they’re the ones you’re laughing at.”

His remark connected two points: he had only 10 days to prepare, and he had written some of the jokes receiving laughs. It was not a claim that the writers had failed; his later account made clear that he regretted how he had put it.
What was the Taylor Swift joke?
Koy contrasted Golden Globes camera shots with NFL broadcasts: “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.” ABC News reported that the broadcast cut to Swift after the joke and that she appeared unamused. That reaction is a reported moment, not a measure of how the room as a whole responded.

How Koy explained the jokes afterward
His explanation of the Taylor Swift line
On January 8, 2024, Koy told ABC’s GMA3 that the joke was “a little flat” and “a weird joke,” adding that he meant it as a jab at NFL broadcasts. The Guardian reported his explanation: “I was trying to make fun of the NFL using cutaways and how the Globes didn’t have to do that.” He also described hosting as difficult: “It’s a tough room and it was a hard job. I’m not gonna lie.” His stated intent explains the target of the joke; it does not establish how viewers or people in the room received it.
His comments about the writers
In an interview reported by The Independent on January 11, Koy called his onstage comment about the writers “a rookie move,” praised their work, and said he had been grasping in the moment. The Independent also reported that the writers first met in person the day before the monologue was due and that Koy had not tried the material on a live audience.

Was Jo Koy booed?
Some coverage described the monologue or particular jokes as bombing, falling flat, or drawing boos. Those are outlet characterizations, not a counted audience statistic. The reporting cited here does not provide a reliable tally of boos or a measured response for the monologue, so it would overstate the evidence to say the entire room booed.
For broadcast context, the Associated Press reported that CBS said the January 7 telecast averaged 9.4 million viewers in 2024, about 50% more than the previous year; AP noted the event benefited from an NFL lead-in. That figure concerns the full telecast’s audience, not reception of Koy’s monologue.
