The ceremony took place January 5, 2025, at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, with Nikki Glaser as host. What counted as “best” or “worst” depended on the lens: the Golden Globes’ own retrospective emphasized personal and emotional moments, while the Los Angeles Times praised one speech and criticized another and the show’s camera staging.
What defined the 2025 Golden Globes?
The night’s most memorable moments fell into two broad categories: speeches that connected awards to family, career setbacks, or loss, and jokes that kept the ceremony moving. The official Golden Globes retrospective selected highlights rather than ranking every moment or measuring audience response. The Los Angeles Times’ live coverage offered a more openly critical perspective.
The emotional moments
Karla Sofía Gascón’s closing appeal
The Golden Globes’ retrospective singled out Karla Sofía Gascón’s closing appeal for acceptance and her hope that light would overcome darkness as the night’s final, resonant moment. That is the ceremony’s own assessment of the speech, not a universal verdict.
Demi Moore’s first Globe
Accepting her award for The Substance, Moore reflected on having been dismissed as a “popcorn actress.” The official retrospective highlighted her reaction and quoted her saying, “This is the first time I’ve ever won anything.” The moment joined a career milestone to a candid account of how she had been regarded in the industry.

Zoe Saldaña’s speech
Saldaña was another visibly emotional winner in the official account. Los Angeles Times writer Glenn Whipp went further, calling her speech the best of the night. That is Whipp’s critical judgment, rather than a poll of viewers.
Fernanda Torres’s dedication
Torres dedicated her win to her mother, Fernanda Montenegro. The Golden Globes noted that Montenegro was the first Brazilian actress nominated for a Globe, in 1998 for Central Station. Torres won for her role in I’m Still Here.
Brady Corbet on family and loss
The Brutalist director Brady Corbet acknowledged his young daughter’s reaction to his speech and the recent death of filmmaker Jeff Baena, Aubrey Plaza’s husband. The official retrospective included both details among the night’s personal moments.

The comic and unexpected moments
Adam Sandler joins Glaser’s Chalamet impression
During her monologue, host Nikki Glaser brought Adam Sandler into an impression of Timothée Chalamet’s voice. It was one of the evening’s lighter exchanges, built around the contrast between Glaser’s bit and Sandler’s participation.

Seth Rogen and Catherine O’Hara riffed on Canada during a presenter exchange involving fictional “Golden Antlers.” The official retrospective also noted that Rogen was bleeped for an extended stretch.
A papal hat, then a change of mind
Glaser briefly wore a papal hat for a joke linking Wicked and Conclave. A pretend phone call interrupted the bit and changed her mind.

What critics called the worst moments
Audiard’s remarks drew a sharp review
Whipp named director Jacques Audiard’s remarks the night’s worst speech, describing them as rambling. That label belongs to the Times writer; the available coverage does not establish it as an audience-wide consensus.
The angled camera staging
The Times also criticized the unusual angled camera setup. The Associated Press reported Rogen’s complaint: “I want to start by saying this whole angled camera thing is very weird,” he said. “It’s inelegant, it’s strange, this whole half of the room can see my bald spot, I would’ve filled that in.” The remarks turned a production choice into one of the show’s most visible awkward moments.

A divided response to the top film award
The Times live coverage recorded disagreement over Emilia Pérez winning motion picture, musical or comedy: one writer criticized the film while acknowledging that voters had backed it. The contrast is a useful reminder that reactions to the winners—and to the ceremony itself—were not uniform.

How to read the “best and worst” lists
The clearest way to interpret the night is to separate selected highlights from criticism. The Golden Globes’ retrospective emphasized speeches and personal reactions; the Times supplied explicit praise and complaints, including its assessment of Saldaña’s and Audiard’s speeches and the camera angles. Neither source establishes what every viewer thought.
The Associated Press reported that the ceremony aired on CBS and streamed on Paramount+ at the time. That historical broadcast detail does not establish where the 2025 show is currently available to watch.
