The 68th Annual Grammy Awards are over: Bad Bunny won Album of the Year for DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS, Kendrick Lamar and SZA won Record of the Year for “luther,” Billie Eilish and Finneas won Song of the Year for “WILDFLOWER,” and Olivia Dean won Best New Artist. Before the February 1, 2026 ceremony, predictions and personal picks did not always match. Looking back makes the distinction clear: the official winners settle who won, but “who should win” remains a judgment based on stated critical criteria.
Who won the 2026 Grammys’ top categories?
The Recording Academy’s official results for the 68th Annual Grammy Awards list these winners in four of the ceremony’s most visible categories:
| Category | 2026 winner |
|---|---|
| Album of the Year | Bad Bunny, DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS |
| Record of the Year | Kendrick Lamar and SZA, “luther” |
| Song of the Year | Billie Eilish and Finneas, “WILDFLOWER” |
| Best New Artist | Olivia Dean |
These are results, not forecasts. The ceremony took place in Los Angeles on February 1, 2026. The Recording Academy’s official 68th Annual Grammy Awards results are the authoritative place to verify these and other category outcomes.
What did the pre-ceremony predictions get right?
A January 23, 2026 Associated Press preview shows why a predicted winner and a critic’s preferred winner should be treated as separate answers. In its Album of the Year discussion, AP journalist Maria Sherman predicted Lady Gaga’s Mayhem would win, but argued that Bad Bunny’s DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS should win. The eventual result matched Sherman’s preference, not her forecast: Bad Bunny took the award. These were the views of named journalists before the show, not an Academy position or a claim of critical consensus.

Jonathan Landrum Jr., writing in the same AP preview, argued that Kendrick Lamar’s GNX should win, pointing to its presence in music and broader culture. That is an argument about merit, not a prediction of the confidential vote. The AP’s January 23, 2026 Grammy preview is a dated snapshot of those pre-show judgments; it should not be read as a live forecast after the ceremony.
Why Grammy forecasts are uncertain
The Academy says its awards are selected by music makers in its voting membership. Its process includes an eligibility review by the Awards Department, category-placement review by genre-based screening committees, a first voting round to determine nominees, and a final round to select winners. The Academy describes the Grammy as an award whose nominees and winners are determined by creators themselves; that is the Academy’s characterization of its process.

Voting members may vote in up to ten categories across three genre fields, as well as the six General Field categories. The Academy also describes an alternative Ballot Plus option for eligible members. Because ballots are not public, nomination totals, commercial visibility, reviews, an artist’s past wins, or an outside observer’s reading of the field cannot establish how individual members voted. The Academy’s Awards Process page explains its stated rules.

Some category rules and names changed for this edition. The Academy added Best Traditional Country Album and Best Album Cover, renamed Best Country Album to Best Contemporary Country Album, expanded Best New Artist eligibility for certain featured artists previously nominated for Album of the Year, and combined the former recording-package categories into Best Recording Package. It also broadened eligibility for Best Recording Package, Best Album Notes, and Best Historical Album to qualifying physical packages sold directly to fans through an artist’s or label’s website. That rule concerns award eligibility; by itself, it does not establish that a particular album has a physical edition for sale.
The dates, scope, and category changes are set out in the Recording Academy’s June 12, 2025 announcement.

How to answer “who should have won?”
There is no official or objective result for “should win.” A defensible critical choice makes its standards explicit and applies them consistently. For an album, that might mean weighing cohesion and ambition alongside songwriting, performance, production, and cultural or artistic impact. A song or recording may call for closer attention to lyrical craft, arrangement, or vocal and instrumental execution. These are useful critical lenses, not Grammy scoring rules.
Keeping that judgment separate from the prediction prevents a common mistake: treating the most likely winner as automatically the most deserving. Sherman’s Album of the Year picks illustrate the difference—she forecast Mayhem, preferred DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS, and the latter won. Landrum’s case for GNX offers another argued preference, not a report of how voters would decide.
