Coco, the housekeeper played by Charles Levin in The Golden Girls pilot, was dropped because the show’s writers found the character unnecessary to the four-woman ensemble. Retrospective accounts also connect his departure to Estelle Getty’s Sophia growing from a recurring character into a full-time member of the cast—not to a reported personal or performance issue involving Levin.
Who was Coco in the pilot?
Coco was a gay housekeeper in the pilot, played by Charles Levin. The character did not continue when The Golden Girls moved forward with its regular cast of Dorothy (Bea Arthur), Rose (Betty White), Blanche (Rue McClanahan) and Sophia (Estelle Getty). The Television Academy lists those four women as the series regulars; its overview records the show’s NBC run from September 1985 to September 1992 and 180 episodes. Television Academy overview
Why was Coco dropped?
The accounts point to a creative and structural decision: the writers did not see a strong enough role for another regular character alongside the four leads. First-season writer Stan Zimmerman recalled that Coco was funny, but “it wasn’t really needed,” and said the writers were smart to let the character go. Out.com reported his recollection from The Girls: From Golden to Gilmore, attributing the quote to People. Out.com’s report on Zimmerman’s recollection
The four leads already filled the show’s center
Zimmerman’s explanation is about Coco’s usefulness to the story, not a judgment that Levin’s performance failed. In a separate account, casting director Joel Thurm described the character as “superfluous”: although Coco got laughs, Thurm said there was no way he could compete for screen time with the four women. Fox News reported that explanation by quoting Thurm’s book, rather than presenting it as a direct interview. Fox News’s account of Thurm’s explanation

Sophia’s role expanded
The change in Sophia’s place on the show is part of the explanation. Thurm’s quoted account says Sophia had initially been conceived as a recurring character, then became equal to the main quartet. Out.com likewise connects Coco’s departure after the pilot with Getty joining the cast full time. With Sophia taking a larger role, the series had its four central women; Coco was not retained as an additional regular.
What the available accounts do—and do not—show
The two explanations complement each other: Zimmerman emphasized that Coco was not needed, while Thurm emphasized the limited screen time available beside the four leads. Both describe the shape of the ensemble, with Sophia’s expanded role as part of that transition.

These retrospective accounts do not establish that Levin was removed because of his conduct, a poor performance, a test-audience reaction or a specific executive’s decision. The supported explanation is that the character was written out as the show settled around its four-woman cast.
