Omega has spoken of deep love and trust for Ibushi, but also said he did not want their real-life bond sexualized. The public record supports a meaningful friendship and professional partnership—not a claim that they were romantic partners.
1. Omega and Ibushi first met in the ring in 2008
Omega’s published timeline says he named Ibushi as one of his favorite Japanese wrestlers in May 2008, traveled to Japan that summer, and faced him in a DDT singles match on August 6. Ibushi won their first match. Omega’s timeline is the source for these early dates.
2. The Golden Lovers began as a team in January 2009
They first teamed in a six-person match that month. On January 24, they wrestled their first match billed as the Golden Lovers and won the KO-D Tag Team Championship, according to the timeline. The name became the public identity of their partnership in the ring.
3. Their partnership earned recognition in DDT and NJPW
The team’s title history crossed promotions. They held DDT’s KO-D Tag Team Championship and, in November 2010, won NJPW’s IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship. Omega’s timeline says the title-winning match later received a best-match award, but does not identify an awarding body, so it is best not to attach one.

4. They built parallel careers before their regular teaming ended
Ibushi worked across DDT and NJPW, while the pair continued to team at points, including a KO-D Tag Team Championship win in 2014. Their final DDT match together came on October 26, 2014, as Omega moved to NJPW. The separation was a change in their career paths, not evidence of a public feud.
5. They spent three years and four months apart as a team
A 2018 NJPW feature described their split as a matter of their paths diverging, rather than hatred between them. The feature’s phrasing—“It wasn’t that they hated each other—fate had pulled Ibushi and Kenny apart”—is the publication’s narrative framing, not a direct statement from either wrestler. The feature and Omega’s timeline place their next team match in February 2018, three years and four months after their previous one.

6. Hints preceded their February 2018 reunion
The translated NJPW feature recounts Omega sending hints through social media and interviews as their paths drew closer. The team returned on February 23–24, 2018, according to Omega’s timeline. That reunion brought them back together as a team after the long gap.
7. Omega said the reunion itself was the payoff
In comments reported by Fightful in 2019 from the Killing The Town podcast, Omega said they had spent years unable to be publicly seen together. He reflected: “I feel like the payoff weren’t the matches, but the payoff was the reunion itself.” His comment makes clear that, for him, the significance was not limited to what they did in the ring. 8. They worked together again in 2018
After reuniting, Omega and Ibushi wrestled at NJPW events and in the United States. Omega’s timeline lists their US debut in March, a singles match against each other in the G1 Climax in August, and an October title match involving Cody Rhodes. Their 2018 story therefore included both teamwork and a major singles contest between them.
9. Omega described deep love and trust for Ibushi
In an October 2018 press conference report, Omega said: “I exposed myself and I exposed my relationship and deep love and trust for Ibushi in front of the world. And we want to work together, and change wrestling for a brighter future.” This is Omega’s own description of the bond and of their shared professional hopes. WrestlingInc’s report

10. Omega explicitly rejected sexualizing their real-life bond
In the same podcast discussion reported by Fightful in February 2019, Omega said: “I never wanted, at any point, because it was real life, I never wanted my relationship with Ibushi sexualized.” He also called their reunion “emotional and personal and real.” Those remarks are an important boundary when describing the story: Omega presented the bond as meaningful and real, while rejecting a sexualized interpretation.
What the timeline does—and does not—establish
Omega’s timeline records his departure from NJPW for AEW in January 2019 and later career milestones, many separate from Ibushi’s. The sources cited here document the team’s history and Omega’s public comments; they do not establish the pair’s present private relationship, current plans, or a current reunion status.
