The clearest documented figure is a historical auction result: GQ reported that Pharrell Williams’s 2005 N.E.R.D. chain sold at Joopiter for $2.1 million in 2023, with Drake as the buyer. Other published figures describe separate auction pieces or an owner’s past purchase price—not a verified ranking of current collections.
Here are the notable reported examples the available sources establish, with each amount labeled by what it represents. The evidence supports fewer than ten chain prices; filling out a top ten with unsourced estimates would make the list misleading.
What counts as an “expensive” chain?
A reported price can refer to a completed auction, an owner’s account of what they paid, a jeweler’s statement, or an outside estimate. Those figures are not interchangeable. An auction result records a historical transaction; it is not automatically a current appraisal, and an appearance in an older report does not prove that a rapper still owns the piece.
For that reason, the examples below are grouped by the kind of evidence available rather than presented as a definitive ranking of ten current owners. GQ’s reporting establishes three auction results connected to Pharrell and one first-person purchase-price account from Big Sean. It does not establish seven more chain prices on comparable terms.

Reported auction results
Pharrell Williams’s 2005 N.E.R.D. chain — $2.1 million
GQ reported in 2023 that Pharrell’s 2005 N.E.R.D. chain sold at auction through Joopiter for $2.1 million, with Drake identified as the buyer. This is the strongest high-price example in the available reporting because it is described as an auction result, not merely an estimate. It documents a 2023 sale; it does not establish the chain’s present market value or imply that Pharrell still owns it. GQ’s report on the Joopiter auction.
Pharrell’s brain chain — $150,000
GQ also reported a $150,000 Joopiter auction result for Pharrell’s brain chain in 2023. This is a separate auctioned piece, not another valuation of the N.E.R.D. chain. As with any past sale, the reported result is tied to that transaction and date. GQ’s auction coverage.

Pharrell’s dual skateboard pendant — $103,000
The same GQ coverage reported that Pharrell’s dual skateboard pendant sold for $103,000 at Joopiter. It is a pendant, not a chain, so it should not be counted as a chain price in a chain-only ranking. Its relevance is as a related jewelry auction result, not a comparable entry in a list of chains. GQ’s auction coverage.
Owner-reported purchase price
Big Sean’s Verbal-made pow chains — about $15,000 each
In a 2012 GQ interview, Big Sean said his Verbal-made pow chains cost about $15,000 apiece. That is the rapper’s account of their purchase price at the time, not a later auction result or current appraisal. Big Sean also said Kanye West gave him his first Jacob the Jeweler Jesus piece, but the interview evidence supplied here gives no price for that gift. GQ’s interview with Big Sean.

Why this is not a verified top ten
The available reporting does not document ten rapper-owned chains with comparable, attributable prices and evidence of current ownership. In particular, a surfaced BET excerpt from the 2020 Hip Hop Awards associates a $100,000 figure with Juicy J’s watches, not a verified chain price; it cannot responsibly be used to rank his chains. More generally, online estimates should not be presented as sale prices unless a credible source identifies the underlying transaction.
- Auction result: a price reported for a completed sale, such as the 2023 Joopiter result for the N.E.R.D. chain.
- Owner-stated cost: a buyer’s account of what they paid, such as Big Sean’s 2012 statement about his pow chains.
- Estimate: a third-party valuation that may not reflect a sale or what an owner paid.
- Ownership: a past appearance or association does not by itself establish who owns a piece now.
Keeping those distinctions visible makes the documented prices useful without turning a handful of differently sourced figures into a false ranking.
