Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department earned a nomination for Album of the Year at the 2025 GRAMMY Awards, marking her seventh nomination in that category. It was one of six nominations Swift received across the 67th Annual GRAMMY Awards cycle. She did not win: Beyoncé’s COWBOY CARTER took Album of the Year at the Feb. 2, 2025 ceremony.
Why this was Taylor Swift’s seventh Album of the Year nomination
The Recording Academy counted Swift’s nomination for The Tortured Poets Department as her seventh in the Album of the Year category. That is a career total for one category—not her total number of nominations in 2025. The Academy announced six nominations for Swift across categories for the 67th GRAMMYs cycle.

In its Nov. 8, 2024 article on the nominees, the Academy described the recognition as Swift’s “seventh Album Of The Year nomination.” The phrase refers to the category history, rather than seven nominations in that year’s awards cycle. Album of the Year recognizes the album and its credited contributors, not only the lead artist. The Academy’s category description includes eligible featured artists, songwriters, producers, recording engineers, mixers and mastering engineers. A nomination therefore reflects recognition across an album’s credited work; it is not a published ranking of the nominees’ artistic merits. How Swift’s nomination fits the recent category history
Swift won Album of the Year at the 2024 GRAMMYs for Midnights. The following year, The Tortured Poets Department returned her to the category as a nominee, but the award went to Beyoncé’s COWBOY CARTER. The 2025 ceremony took place on Feb. 2. Recording Academy: 2025 winners and nominees

- The 1989 album changed my life in countless ways, and it fills me with such excitement to announce that my version of it will be out October 27th
What happened to The Tortured Poets Department at the ceremony?
Swift’s album was nominated, but it did not win Album of the Year. Beyoncé won for COWBOY CARTER. That distinction matters because the headline’s “earns” describes the nomination milestone, not a 2025 victory.
