Godzilla crashes Jay Gatsby’s world in Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre, a Tom Scioli comic published by IDW. Announced in July 2024 as a three-issue miniseries, it sets the monster loose in a 1922 literary mash-up; IDW’s 2025 collected paperback gathers issues #1–3.
What is the comic about?
The premise begins with Gatsby throwing a party that draws Godzilla into the story. Gatsby then teams up with literary and historical figures to confront the monster. The announcement describes the setting as 1922 and names Jay Gatsby, Sherlock Holmes, H. G. Wells’ Time Traveler, and Dracula among the characters caught up in the clash. Gizmodo’s July 20, 2024 announcement presents it as a collision between Godzilla and classic literature.
The collected edition’s description broadens the roster to include the Time Machinist, Thomas Edison, Jules Verne, and Baron von Frankenstein. Those additional names come from the collection’s catalog description, rather than the shorter initial announcement. The Orange County Library System catalog record says Gatsby and the others try to stop Godzilla.
Who made it, and when was it released?
Tom Scioli is the writer and artist, and IDW is the publisher, according to the 2024 announcement. Scioli’s concept was relayed with the line, “Imagine if Godzilla thundered into the great American novel,” which Gizmodo attributes to Scioli speaking to TheWrap. This is a quotation reported by Gizmodo, not a direct interview transcript.
