Trump’s post also referred to Clooney’s 2024 call for President Joe Biden to leave the presidential race and to Clooney’s support for Kamala Harris. The citizenship, film criticism and political references appeared together in the post; the “mediocre” remark was one part of a broader attack.

November meant the 2026 U.S. midterm elections. The Guardian’s retrospective gives the election date as November 3, 2026. Clooney’s line pointed toward that election; it did not specify an outcome or say which party would win control of either chamber of Congress.
Why the two men were already in dispute
Shortly before Trump’s post, Clooney told Variety that he and Trump had once been friendly. TheWrap quoted Clooney recalling, “I knew him very well,” and describing Trump as “a big goofball. Well, he was. That all changed.” Clooney also criticized ABC and CBS in the Variety interview for settling lawsuits filed by Trump. That interview formed part of the immediate context, though Trump’s post also addressed Clooney’s political activity and the Clooneys’ French citizenship.

Keep the January exchange separate from the later clash
A separate Clooney–White House dispute followed in April 2026, after Clooney condemned Trump’s threat toward Iran and White House communications director Steven Cheung insulted Clooney’s acting.
