Gene Simmons apologized on December 10, 2025, after remarks about former KISS bandmate Ace Frehley’s death drew criticism. Simmons said he was wrong to use the words he used and that he had always loved Frehley. His apology followed an interview in which he questioned whether a fall could cause death and criticized Frehley’s decisions; it did not change the medical examiner’s reported finding that Frehley died accidentally from head injuries caused by a fall.
What Gene Simmons said—and what he apologized for
In an early December interview with the New York Post, Simmons said Frehley had rejected advice to change his lifestyle, referred to “bad decisions,” and said, “Falling down the stairs — I’m not a doctor — doesn’t kill you.” Those remarks prompted criticism because they publicly speculated about Frehley’s choices and the circumstances of his death.

On December 10, Simmons posted an apology on X. Blabbermouth.net reproduced his statement as follows:
“On reflection, I was wrong for using the words I used. I humbly apologize. My hand to God I didn’t intended to hurt Ace or his legacy but upon rereading my words, I see how it hurt everyone. Again, I apologize. I’ve always loved Ace. Always.”

The wording above follows Blabbermouth.net’s reproduced version, including the phrase “didn’t intended.” The apology addressed Simmons’s choice of words and the hurt they caused; he said he had not intended to hurt Frehley or his legacy.
What was reported about Frehley’s death
Ace Frehley died at age 74 on October 16, 2025. News reports citing the Morris County Medical Examiner said he died from blunt-trauma injuries to the head caused by a fall, and that his death was ruled accidental. That reported determination is distinct from Simmons’s interview speculation: Simmons was not establishing the cause or manner of death.

How the comments and apology unfolded
- October 16, 2025: Frehley died at 74. In a statement reported that day, Simmons and Paul Stanley mourned him and described him as essential to KISS’s history and legacy.
- Early December 2025: Simmons’s interview remarks about Frehley’s lifestyle and fall were reported by the New York Post.
- December 10, 2025: Simmons posted his apology on X, acknowledging that his words had hurt people.
Why the relationship mattered
Frehley co-founded KISS and played lead guitar. His history with the band included an initial departure in 1982, a return during a reunion period, and a final departure in 2002, according to Guitar World. He also pursued a solo career.
The public remarks came from a bandmate with a long and complicated shared history, not a detached observer. In the statement issued after Frehley’s death, Simmons and Stanley called him “an essential and irreplaceable rock soldier” in the band’s formative years and said he would always be part of KISS’s legacy. Simmons’s later apology acknowledged the impact of his words without withdrawing that broader bond.
