The reported asking price is not the closing price: reports reviewed did not disclose the final sale amount.
Did Gene Hackman’s Santa Fe estate sell?
Yes. The estate went under contract eight days after it was listed, and Sotheby’s International Realty later reported that it sold after about a month on the market. The brokerage’s September 3, 2026 post confirmed the sale, but no reviewed source reported the transaction price. New Mexico does not require home sale prices to be made public, according to a February 2026 report.
What was the asking price?
Realtor.com reported the property listed for $6.25 million in January 2026. Its report appeared January 15; subsequent reporting identified January 16 as the formal listing date. The often-rounded “$6 million” figure refers to the asking price, not a verified sale price. The available reports do not establish what the buyer paid.
What was included in the estate?
The gated Santa Fe Summit property covered approximately 53 acres and had about 13,000 square feet across three buildings. Albuquerque Journal reported six bedrooms and 10 bathrooms in total.

| Main residence | 8,813 square feet (Albuquerque Journal, 2026) |

Architectural Digest described the main house as a contemporary-meets-adobe design, with floor-to-ceiling windows, exposed beams, native stone, fireplaces, a library and a large kitchen. Outdoor features included a lap pool, hot tub and putting green.
A home and working compound
Hackman used the studio for painting, while Arakawa kept concert pianos there, according to local reporting. The couple developed the compound over time. Before the listing, the home was professionally staged; the estate was also expected to cover repairs, including a new roof.
What happened before the sale?
Hackman and Arakawa were found at the home in February 2025. Investigators’ findings, as reported at the time, said Arakawa died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome and Hackman died days later of heart disease with complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
Listing agent Tara Earley of Sotheby’s International Realty acknowledged that the deaths could affect some prospective buyers. As quoted by Realtor.com, she said some people would be “averse to purchasing a property where a death has occurred,” while others would not be deterred. Earley said the agents presented the estate on its merits and priced it at what they considered fair market value.

What the listing says about the property—not the market
The quick move to contract and the later reported sale describe this one estate, not a broader Santa Fe luxury-housing trend. The available reporting does not provide a comparable-sales analysis that would show whether the $6.25 million asking price was above or below market value. Builder Doug McDowell, quoted by Albuquerque Journal, described the house as having “a real elegant simplicity to it.”
