Andrew DeLuca dies after being stabbed while pursuing a suspected human trafficker. The chase begins in a Station 19 crossover; Grey’s Anatomy shows his colleagues’ attempt to save him and his final goodbye to Meredith.
What happens to Andrew DeLuca?
- Andrew and his sister, Carina, recognize a woman they suspect is connected to human trafficking and follow her.
- Andrew runs after the woman during the pursuit. A man stabs him, and police ultimately capture the suspected trafficker.
- Andrew is taken to Grey Sloan Memorial, where his colleagues try to save him in surgery.
- While Meredith is unresponsive with COVID-19, she encounters Andrew in the beach sequence associated with her illness. They say goodbye, and Andrew dies.
DeLuca does not die from COVID-19: he dies from the stabbing. ABC News reported that the Grey’s Anatomy episode showing his death aired March 11, 2021, as the season 17 midseason premiere. ABC News’ account of the episode describes the pursuit, stabbing, attempted rescue, and goodbye.

Which show shows the stabbing and his death?
The pursuit and stabbing are part of the crossover story set up in Station 19. The rescue attempt and Andrew’s death are shown in Grey’s Anatomy. The exact episode titles and viewing order are not established here, so this distinction identifies where the events occur without guessing at a watch order.
Why did the writers kill DeLuca?
In a Shondaland interview, Giacomo Gianniotti, who played Andrew, said producers Krista Vernoff and Debbie Allen told him they had gone back and forth about DeLuca’s story but repeatedly arrived at the same ending: his death. Gianniotti said he was initially taken aback, then saw the storyline as an opportunity to draw attention to human trafficking in America. That is Gianniotti’s account of the creative decision.
