Hadid’s custom gold sequined Miu Miu gown paired a tailored silhouette with the shine of gold lamé. Vogue quoted her describing the design as a celebration of Zelda Wynn Valdes: “The dress is a celebration of Zelda—this is a dress maybe she would have designed for me, combining both tailoring and glamour.” Vogue’s event-night coverage identifies Karefa-Johnson as the stylist.
The gown’s historical references
The look connected two fashion histories. It paid tribute to Zelda Wynn Valdes, the pioneering Black fashion designer known for elegant, form-conscious eveningwear. Vogue’s historical-reference coverage also links Hadid’s gold gown directly to a Balmain dress Josephine Baker wore in 1951. Hadid explained Valdes’s significance this way: “She took her technique and the skill in men’s tailoring and applied that to the female form,” adding, “I hope that she would love this.”
Those references suited the gala’s theme. The 2025 event celebrated the Costume Institute exhibition Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, which examines the history of the Black dandy and the role of clothing and style in forming Black identities across the Atlantic diaspora. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition page outlines the exhibition’s subject.

How to describe Hadid’s hair
Vogue’s event-night report called the hairstyle a Victory Roll look. Giannetos transformed Hadid’s short bob into longer, collarbone-skimming lengths, giving the style a sculpted vintage silhouette. In its next-day beauty coverage, Vogue described the finished result as blonde boudoir curls. The two descriptions refer to the same overall look from different angles: the Victory Roll emphasizes its retro shape, while “boudoir curls” describes the soft, glamorous curls. Vogue’s beauty coverage credits Giannetos.
“Pin curls” are a useful broader reference for period styling, but the coverage does not establish that pin curls were the specific setting technique Giannetos used on Hadid. Vogue’s discussion of 1940s beauty describes neat pin curls and pompadours as characteristic styles; that context should not be mistaken for a confirmed account of her exact hair process.

The documented earrings
Hadid’s earrings were De Beers Light Rays Chandelier diamond fan earrings from the Alchemist of Light collection. Only Natural Diamonds’ 2025 jewelry recap reports that the pair contained 186 diamonds totaling 4.94 carats. That specification applies to the earrings reported for this gala look, not to every piece in the collection.
