Guru Tegh Bahadur was the ninth Sikh Guru, and his bani—his spiritual compositions—remains part of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. A Sikh educational publication describes that bani as focused on bairag: reflection on life’s realities and death, held in balance with worldly responsibilities. His life and legacy are also recounted through institutional biographies and modern interpretations of his defense of conscience.

Who was Guru Tegh Bahadur?

Guru Tegh Bahadur was the ninth Sikh Guru. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s institutional biography portrays him as a mystic and recounts his preaching travels, the establishment of new Manjis (preaching centres), and his execution in Delhi. That account offers broad life context; the historical sources cited here do not resolve every debate about the circumstances or motivations surrounding his execution.

Read the SGPC biography of Guru Tegh Bahadur.

What were Guru Tegh Bahadur’s teachings?

A Sikh educational publication presents his compositions as Gurbani and says Guru Gobind Singh included them in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. The publication gives a combined count of 116 shabads and salokas. This is that book’s stated count; compositions can be counted or categorized differently, so it should not be treated as a universally settled total.

Bairag and a balanced view of life

The publication characterizes the bani as bairag-centric. In its interpretation, bairag means facing life’s realities and death with spiritual insight, not simply withdrawing from the world. It emphasizes a balance between spiritual and secular concerns: reflection on mortality can shape how a person lives and acts in the world.

This is the educational book’s reading of the compositions, rather than a claim that every hymn has one identical theme. The source’s central point is that spiritual awareness and engagement with worldly life belong in the same frame.

What is Guru Tegh Bahadur remembered for?

The University of Delhi’s Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College connects his life and philosophy with continuity in Guru Nanak’s message of the unity of God. The college also interprets his legacy as an inspiration to live free from fear and enmity, and his sacrifice as a defense of conscience. These are the institution’s modern framing of his significance.

How to understand the different accounts

The sources address different questions. The SGPC provides institutional biographical context; the Sikh educational book explains and interprets the bani; and the Delhi college articulates a contemporary view of his legacy. Keeping those roles distinct helps readers separate biographical narration, textual interpretation, and modern commemoration—especially when considering disputed details of his execution.
