Funny spoof titles work best when the original movie is easy to recognize and the altered wording supplies a fresh joke. Here are published MAD examples alongside clearly labeled fan-submitted riffs, plus a distinction between title puns and films that spoof a whole genre.

Published MAD movie-spoof titles

MAD’s reference list documents these titles as film parodies. Each changes a recognizable movie title, so the original is part of the punchline.

  • “Ping Pong!” → King Kong: The title swaps the monster’s name for a rhyming table-tennis phrase.
  • “Hah! Noon!” → High Noon: The familiar western title becomes a comic exclamation, while keeping its sound and rhythm.

Fan-submitted riffs on movie titles

The following examples come from a MAD-like fan-submission collection. They are reader-submitted ideas, not verified published MAD titles or commercially released films.

  • “Bland Runner” → Blade Runner: Replacing “Blade” with “Bland” turns the tense science-fiction title into a joke about being dull.
  • “The Schmooze Brothers” → The Blues Brothers: The sound-alike substitution makes the musical duo sound like smooth talkers.
  • “Chariots Afire” → Chariots of Fire: The altered phrase suggests something literally ablaze, while retaining the original title’s recognizable shape.

The collection includes contributor names and submission dates, but that provenance establishes them as submissions, not as official film or magazine titles. MAD-like fan-submission collection

Title pun or genre spoof? What is the difference?

A title pun changes the words of a specific movie title. A genre spoof instead imitates patterns associated with a category of films; its own title need not be a pun on one particular movie. The distinction helps when gathering examples, because the two kinds of humor are related but not interchangeable.

  • Title-focused: “Ping Pong!” reshapes King Kong; the joke is legible in the paired titles.
  • Genre-focused: Focus Features describes Hot Fuzz as an action spoof and Burn After Reading as a spoof of spy films. Those examples parody genre conventions rather than simply renaming one target film. Focus Features on comedy spoofs

How to recognize a strong movie-title spoof

  • The source title is recognizable. The altered version depends on readers hearing or seeing the original behind the joke.
  • The change has a clear payoff. A sound substitution, spelling change, added or removed word, or phrase twist should create a new comic meaning rather than merely resemble the source.
  • The target is named. Pairing the spoof with its original makes the reference accessible without requiring readers to solve every title unaided.
  • The provenance is clear. A published parody and a fan suggestion may both be amusing, but they are not the same kind of example.
