Gary “Mani” Mounfield, the bassist whose career connected the Stone Roses’ Madchester breakthrough with Primal Scream’s later albums, has died aged 63. His death was announced by his brother, Greg, and confirmed by former bandmate Ian Brown. The cause of death had not been announced in reports from the Guardian and Pitchfork.

Who was Gary “Mani” Mounfield?

Mounfield was an English bassist best known for playing with the Stone Roses and Primal Scream, two influential British rock bands. Born on 16 November 1962 in Crumpsall, he attended Xaverian College in Rusholme and left school at 16, according to The Guardian.

He had played guitar before switching to bass. Reflecting on the change, he told the Guardian: “I found it more rewarding playing the bass guitar than playing rhythm.” He also described his musical grounding as “good old northern soul and funk grooves.” Those recollections offer his own explanation for the instrument and feel he brought to his playing.

What was his role in the Stone Roses?

In the early 1980s, Mounfield formed the Fireside Chaps with guitarist John Squire and Andy Couzens. After changes to the group’s lineup and name, Ian Brown joined as singer and the band became the Stone Roses. The group played its first official gig in October 1984; the Official Charts Company says Mounfield joined in 1987.

He played bass on the band’s 1989 self-titled debut, which helped define the Madchester era. The album includes “I Wanna Be Adored,” “She Bangs The Drums” and “I Am The Resurrection.” The Associated Press describes its sound as a mix of classic-rock riffs and dance music, while the Guardian points to the interlocking grooves between Mounfield and drummer Alan “Reni” Wren.

The Stone Roses released their second album, Second Coming, in 1994. The group split in 1996. Mounfield later returned when the band reunited from 2011 to 2017; during that period the reunited Roses played shows and released two new songs, “All for One” and “Beautiful Thing.”

How did Mounfield’s years with Primal Scream shape his career?

After the Stone Roses split, Mounfield joined Primal Scream. His first work with the group appeared on 1997’s Vanishing Point, including the single “Kowalski.” He remained through a substantial run of the band’s albums:

  • Vanishing Point (1997)
  • XTRMNTR (2000)
  • Evil Heat (2002)
  • Riot City Blues (2006)
  • Beautiful Future (2008)

Pitchfork reports that he left Primal Scream in 2011 to rejoin the Stone Roses. Beyond those two bands, the Associated Press reports that he joined Freebass, a bass-player group with Andy Rourke of the Smiths and Peter Hook of New Order, and appeared in the 2022 film 24 Hour Party People.

What has been reported about his death?

Mounfield’s brother Greg announced his death on Facebook, writing, as quoted by the Guardian: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother.” The Associated Press also reported that Ian Brown confirmed the news on social media, writing: “rest in peace Mani.”

The Guardian and Pitchfork reported that the cause of death had not been shared in their coverage. No cause should be inferred from those reports.

The Guardian reported that Mounfield’s wife, Imelda, died of cancer in 2023 and that he is survived by their twin sons. The Associated Press also reported that the couple had two sons.

How fellow musicians remembered him

Tim Burgess, frontman of The Charlatans, described Mounfield as “a force of nature and one of the greats,” in a statement reported by the Official Charts Company. The tribute speaks to the regard in which he was held by peers, while his recorded work leaves a clear account of his musical legacy: the Stone Roses’ landmark debut and a long stretch of Primal Scream’s catalogue.
