Garth Brooks said he was frightened when the sound failed during his August 14, 2021 concert at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska. He could see the crowd but could not communicate with it; his crew restored the sound within minutes. The account supports a frightening technical interruption and a separate older power failure—not a documented injury to Brooks or several incidents that put him in physical danger.
What happened to Garth Brooks in Lincoln?
During the Garth Brooks Stadium Tour show at Memorial Stadium on August 14, 2021, the sound suddenly went out between songs. Brooks later recalled that it was before sunset, so he could see the audience, but he could not communicate with the crowd. He estimated that 95,000 people were there; that is Brooks’s estimate, not an independently verified attendance figure in the cited account.
Brooks said the crew brought the sound back within minutes. He recalled that the audience thought the pause was part of the show. The episode was a technical failure during a performance, but the available account does not report that Brooks was injured.
Why did Brooks say he was scared?
In a 2025 account of his recollection, Brooks said: “I can tell you as an entertainer, I’ve never been more scared in my life.” His explanation was the sudden loss of communication with a very large crowd while he was onstage. The remark describes his fear in that moment; it does not establish that the audience knew there was a crisis or that anyone faced physical danger.

Brooks also credited the people supporting the show, saying on his official site: “Without your crew, without your band, I don’t care who you are, you’re nothing.”
What was the other reported concert mishap?
A 2021 Washington Post profile recalled a different, older performance interruption. Brooks’s bass player accidentally knocked out power to everything except Brooks’s guitar and microphone. Brooks froze while the problem was fixed, then played the longest song he knew.
